Some dealers (not just Porsche, saw it at Toyota too) in the US have a camera system which scans your car as you drive it into the service drop off bay. It takes pictures of all body panels (should you claim a new scratch or dent during service) as well as tire and any under car damage. It also checks tire tread depths. You can always decline repairs though, as long as you didn't tell them to start on something (e.g. if you told them to inspect the battery and there is damage, they may not put it back together damaged and let you drive off, you might have to tow it and re-assemble it yourself - liability issues for them to assemble back a battery which is damaged).
I’m not sure how hi-tech it is here. But pretty sure the first thing ours do is hoist it to see if they can sell you some new tyres.

1st time post ... 2020 Taycan Turbo held (confiscated) by dealer when it was in for service ... for the ARA42 campaign. After 7 weeks I am now informed that there is damage to the underbody 'armour' (3.86mm) and that Porsche UK say that dealer is 'Unable to carry out campaign ARA42' and that its a £36,240 bill to repair! (oh and yes suggested new tyres - are also on the report!)

What a great get out of jail free card from Porsche UK ... we recognise an issue with your battery sufficiently concerning not to give you your car back, but happy days we can avoid all costs ...

Hey all,

Got a call from my dealer whilst carrying out some warranty work (cameras and wiring loom) and they informed me that there was some damage to the underbody protection panel and that it would have to be replaced and the batteries and coolant lines would need to be inspected as it's past the tolerance that Porsche allow - total cost just under $11k.

The dealer is going to provide me the article, but short version. There are 2 'impact' zones defined, one down the center of the car and the other moving to the edges of the car - tolerance allowed for the center is 3mm and it rises to 10mm the further you get from the center, as you can see mine was 3.33mm

I didn't hear anything when this happened and there are no 'drag' marks, it literally looks like something has come off the road and hit it.

Thought this may be useful info for others

It will be interesting to read the article from Porsche which defines the tolerances. Wen I have inspected mine on the ramp at PRG (Porsche GB) just said tolerance was 10mm. Thankfully mine is still pristine after 19k miles

I am waiting for them to send the article over - I have no cause to disbelieve I just like to look at this stuff myself! I'm sure the insurance adjuster will also want to see a copy also

Did they give you a breakdown of what those costs were? My dealer did, the $11k includes the replacement of the protection panel and inspection of coolant lines and batteries. Fortunately the plate is readily available so once my insurance gives me the go-ahead we shall see.

I would suggest that this alone is good enough reason not to buy a Taycan. I Was on the verge of buying a ST GTS but hesitating due to ongoing depreciation concerns. This has put me off completely. Will stick with my 2018 Macan GTS and buy myself a nice 996 C4S instead and make it perfect. Would expect net zero depreciation from here on

Hi yes ... I have reported it to insurer and now waiting to hear what they say.

Interestingly, having looked back at the photo earlier in the thread and now having the photo of my car the damage is seems to be in an identical place. Perhaps the soft underbelly of the Tacan is not up to the job?

Also still very confused at the difference in suggested cost $11,000 (~£8,700) and £36,000 for a ding that is between 3mm and 4mm.

No detailed breakdown but to be fair I've not asked ... still picking myself up from the floor ... I think it's assuming protection panel and full battery replace. I will let insurer have that conversation.

If I'd crashed the car it would be sad but much easier to accept, but as I have no idea when the damage occurred I really do question how robust the underbelly is.

Tesla took about 4 months to come up with a titanium battery shield retrofit when a Model S drove over a random trailer hitch on the road which punctured the bottom of the battery, causing the car to tell the driver to pull over and get out. The car then caught on fire a few minutes later, burning down in the end. Oh, Tesla also at that time added a battery fire to things covered under the then 8 year, unlimited mileage warranty.

Given's Porsche's PMC+/PMCC recall timeline (which resulted in the same recall Tesla did for their mobile connector, except Tesla took 3 months, Porsche took 4 years), I'm guessing there is a possible titanium shield recall in out future, in a few years.

Of the $11k i was quoted $6.7k is labor (or labour lol) which is mind blowing!! Also, like you I didn't hear or feel anything and even the dealer commented that there isn't any drag or scrape marks, it's literally like something popped up and hit it!!

The protection isn’t fit for purpose. I’d involve Porsche Customer Services.
Is your estimate a worst case? If only the cover has to be replaced that will be significantly cheaper.
