Tesla Model Y and planning to buy a new Taycan

Getting my new Taycan GTS soon and I would like to have some questions:

- In few years old reviews of the Taycan I saw that driving mode settings are resets after you "restart" the car. This issue is still exists, even in the facelift model or its already solved and its saving your settings for all driving modes e.g. normal susspension at Sport mode or folding down mirrors when going backwards, etc ?

- Is the built in navigation usable enough with real time traffic infos or need to use a navigition with carplay?

- Coming from Tesla and have no idea where the fck will I put my phone, is there any good mount for it?

Thank you for your answers!

AFAIK it still doesn't save your settings.

The built in nav is "okay." You'll want to use it over Carplay anyway, as it's the only way to precondition your battery for charging on trips.

I end up putting my phone in the door pocket.

  • drive modes are a thing - and the "reset" is due to regulations - the car has to start out in the mode where it was tested for EPA and other regions testings - if the settings are saved by a particular manufacturer - that simply means they were inconsequential enough not to affect the car's default and stated performance - Prosche allows a greater range of modification and therefore has to "reset" back to base-line to conform to many regional regulations. I don't see this changing any time soon
  • built in nav is very usable, and the only way you get battery @ destination estimates and pre-conditioning for fast charging - it works well enough that you can use it when necessary - and CarPlay/android auto when battery estimate or pre-conditioning doesn't matter
  • phone mounting is a personal choice and there are various options - Im not sure what would or would not make you happy so I encourage you to experiment and find what works for you.

Re the Phone: You can t ry the wireless charger in the armrest console. If that doesn't overheat the phone (as it does on my MY 2021 4s), then you're good. Another place is in the front storage bin of the console.

There is a thread about swapping out on of the cup holders for a powered MagSafe charger connection but while the instructions are nicely written up and the finished result looks great, I couldn't give up one of the cup holders.

FWIW I tried one of those MagSafe attachments for a vent, but found the vent diffuser is so thick (and of course made of plastic) that the MagSafe device would not slide on easily. I was afraid it would eventually snap off so I stopped that experiment.

I know its sounds so stupid but I little afraid that I will regret the the Taycan because of every day use (comfort things like phone open etc) and cabin storage space / practicality comparing to my Tesla. I know its a better car in almost every way, and a better car than 99% of the cars exist, but I afraid because of the things mentiond above, on the end of the day it will be my every day car but for a tons of money. Please somebody tell me that Im just overthinking it :D

You are overthinking it.

GTS is awesome.

MAV (with real-time traffic from Google) is very good IMHO.

Wireless charging in J1.2 has been improved but the center armrest remains a problem.

I use the storage area under the climate control screen for my phone which has worked very well for me.

For nav I find the built in fine. It will pull POI's and traffic etc. from google and compared to my wifes tesla it is just as good (or bad depending on the day).

There is surely a lot of small details that work better in the Tesla but the overall experience is just much nicer in the Taycan.

Reset seems not the proper expression for the driving mode.
It just returns to "normal" and at the steering wheel you can quickly switch to other modes.
J1.1 has the "individual" setting, where your preferences do not reset.
I think J1.2 does not have individual.

My Phone holder is left of the steering wheel next to the vent and works fine there.
Having the phone in or on the cup holder I find annoying, because I can't rest my hand there.

Across this forum there are several threads offering solutions.

While I would never own one, Tesla is better for people who value convenience over everything else. The Taycan is best for people who value the driving experience as #1.

Porsche communication manager is horrible. I have to reboot mine often. It is also super slow to boot up and glitchy at best for me. I don't even bother using the voice recognition or the GPS because it never works properly for me. That said, it drives and looks great but if you want bells and whistles and cool electronics and stereo...you will miss your Tesla.

Congrats!

— with the Chrono package, which I guess you have added, you can setup "Individual" mode and that is remembered. But you need to get from Normal to Individual each time you start the car. That applies to first gen, and I suppose for the second gen too. I have MY 2021.

— mirrors (for reversing and for the driver adjustment) can be set and that is saved. Both are optional features that you'd need to add while ordering.

— I use Apple CarPlay the most. And I don't care that my battery is not pre-heated as you usually charge outside of home on long trips, and there you "pre-heat" the battery by just driving long enough.

— I put my phone inside the front cupholder and it works nice. I have a USB cable linked from the armrest where there are two USB-C ports. As I think that is the most common option in Taycan.

— One addition: you might want to add a front facing camera, and the one that I bought and like is FitcamX

I went from a Tesla to a Taycan. I put my phone in the console charging cradle. Drive modes have not been much of an issue for me as normal has plenty of power and I just twist the knob to go faster. The PCM does give me some issues and I'm hoping the dealer can fix them, about twice as frequent as I had to reboot the Tesla for similar issues.

The things I miss about the Tesla and how I've adjusted:

Phone key - I found the most minimal AirTag keychain and keep the fob separate from other keys.
App - The Tesla app is awesome. The porsche app is not all that bad. It works well and will let you precondition, lock/unlock/monitor charging.

Things about the Taycan I like over the Tesla:

Cabin quietness - I have privacy glass and it is noticeably quieter
Handling - More stable in all conditions
Quality of interior - the leather and materials that Porsche uses are higher quality than the Tesla

They are both excellent cars. I would own another Tesla, but the Taycan is nicer looking and more fun to drive in my opinion.
