Hello everyone, hope everyone is well.

I wanted to ask how efficient is the 3-Pin Charger for regular charging as I won't have access to proper EV home charger, so I'll either relay on Public charging or the 3-Pin Mobile Charger?

And if the 3-Pin Mobile charger is acceptable to use on a regular bases, is there any recommendation of generic chargers on eBay to do the Job without having bad effect on the battery in UK or does it have to be the Porsche official one?

And apart from charging speed, is there any bad impact of different Mobile Charger Voltages on the battery on short or long term use?

Thanks

Charging with any 3-pin EVSE is really only for emergency purposes and not suited for regular home charging.

Any EVSE in UK on this type of supply connection will be limited to drawing 13 amps which means the charging speed will be glacially slow. At best the car will charge at 0.1 miles / minute compared to 0.3 miles per minute on a recommended home set up (32A, 7.4kW single phase supply).

No other downside considerations as this is slow AC charging and not high power / high speed DC charging.

Is there a reason you can't get a 32A supply?

A lot of insurance checks needed on my closed guarage and safety installments before grant approval to install one. As it it a communal privat3 closed guarage, the other owners has to be keen about the process to proceed. Any advise?

What would be the consequences of regular use apart from slow charging? ?

Apart from you personally aging by some years as you wait for the battery to charge, absolutely nothing!

AC (home / public AC) charging is GOOD for your battery. DC charging will age the battery quicker as more heat is generated during the charging process.

As I mentioned, this is an emergency / method of last resort only and will deliver at best 6 miles of range in 1 hour. For most people the home charging ecosystem is only viable if you can have a 32A supply to comfortably charge your battery overnight to around 80 - 90% in 4 hours or so.

If you have lots of time to hang around then there is no issue but hopefully now you at least understand the consequences of this low level of charging.

I managed on three pin charging for about 4 or 5 months before my charger was fitted at home. It’s slow as hell and you need to accept it’ll take days for a full charge. Ironically now 7kWh at home feels slow.

the key thing is you need to check your socket and cabling - normal home wiring can overheat with such long term constant power draw and catch fire.

It depends on how much the driving need is for your daily commute. For us, it's not that much...around 60-80 miles. I set the timer to charge to 80% by 8:30AM, and even though the EVSE is only set at 50%, it doesn't kick on until well after midnight. I have a Tesla wall charger too if I need to charge it quicker, but the mobile EVSE is right next to where we park so it's much more convenient.

Fellow Brit here. I would not recommend the three-pin plug option except for occasional small top-ups. It just takes too long to charge for normal use. But if you do go that route do get a proper EV extension cable (evcables.com) if you need one other wise the plugs and sockets may overheat which can fuse your domestic socket and if the other end gets warm the charger will derated it from 2kW to 1kW or less to stop it overheating (Porsche charger that is). Octopus will put a charger in for you for not a lot of money otherwise.. And its worth is at 6p/kWh for Octopus vs 29p at the domestic rate or up to 90p from public chargers. If you have to use public chargers check there are some convenient ones near you on the Porsche network and get their charging card. Drops the rate significantly on their network members’ chargers.

I'd approach your landlord/management company and ask them. They're going to be getting plenty of enquiries about this over the next few years I suspect.

All you really needs is a 32A commando socket. The Porsche charger you get with the car likely comes with an adapter. Just tell your managing agent it's for occasional use - if you don't do many miles a day you probably won't need to charge that frequently.

Unfortunately, they raised a lot of issues, claiming it need insurance approval, it it is not recommended as might cause fire to surrounding cars. Moreover, it might need the installation of water pipes in case of fire as it is a closed garage. So, I'm trying to push for a 3 pin socket for now😮💨
