Hello

been reading this forum for some time now and I find it very helpful. I drive a 2023 Porsche taycan sport turismo in mamba green. Love the car and apart from the usual recalls I never had a serious issue until now unfortunately. Been driving it daily for almost 3 years and 55k km.

couple of days ago I had the red electrical fault dashboard error. Got out, locked the car and it luckily disappeared. Called Porsche assistance on what to do but they referred me to the dealer since the car was driving and giving no errors anymore. Called the dealer, was advised to drive it further and don't bring it in since the error was gone and the car drove fine. Dealer said If it reoccured I should bring it in which I did last Friday because it unfortunately happened again during the morning when I was getting ready to drive to work. This time resetting and locking the car didn’t do the trick. Totally bricked car could only put it in neutral. Called my insurance which sent a flatbed tow car to bring it to the dealer where it now waits to be diagnosed. 12v should be fine since screens were working. I don’t have the prone to failure 22kwh charger but the standard 11kwh so by process of elimination it seems I am in for a HV battery replacement or at least some cells need some attention.

I am really concerned since the car is out of regular warranty (2years) but still has the HV battery warranty which runs for 8y or 160k km I think.

I have seen no drop in range from the battery on my dashboard when it happened and I also got no alert in my app… software glitch that bricks the car or the HV battery has some bad cells… bummer :-(

There have been numerous posts about this issue, my car has ARB7 so most likely my battery has gone bad… any insights ?

thanks

How do you have a 2023 that's out of warranty? Did you hit 50k miles?

Either way, you will be covered by the drivetrain/battery warranty.

I meant a model year 2023 , my bad. In Europe we have 2y overall warranty and 8y on the battery.

The HV covers only the cells, in case there is something else wrong it isn’t covered. Same
Goes for the drivetrain - e.g. power electronics are not covered.

Do you have extended warranty?

They unfortunately refused to give me approved warranty because of my aftermarket vossen wheels…

what I really find strange is while my car sits at the dealer lot and when I open my app I see no warnings or faults whatsoever. Something serious like the red electrical fault error should push a notification to the app no ? Maybe my error is based on electrical gremlins ....

what you could do is to run carscanner mobile app with an OBD dongle and read the fault codes - that could give you a first idea about what could be wrong. Isn't as detailed or trustworthy as the dealership software though. But it's better than just wait for the dealership to respond, which could take days. And no, I don't think that trouble codes are pushed to the porsche app - at least not all of them.

I really like the car but having to deal with an unreliable battery or high voltage system is just too much for me. I use it daily and drive 20k Km's a year with it... I will let everyone know what the final answer from the dealer is, just for future reference for other unfortunate people who get this type of fault on their dashboard.

I fully understand your point. Cars like the porsche taycan, the chevy bolt and the jaguar i-pace introduced the "battery quality anxiety" in the EV community, further to the existing "range anxiety" inherent in all EVs. The truth is, that all battery problems have been/ are being dealt with by companies and, truth be told, it seems that such battery problems didn't affect a very big number of vehicles at the end of the day. It's not much different than ICE cars - I am sure all of us have dealt with recalls on our ICE cars in the past. It's just we (believe that) we know/understand ICE-tech better, plus we can find independent shops that can handle our ICE cars; which is not the case with EVs. Even dealerships don't make a good job of convincing us that they know EV-tech good enough in one too many occasions.
Hope your problem is resolved - if it turns out that it's battery related, you may even get lucky and get a new 2024 battery fitted.

That error is just a check engine light. It can mean anything.
You can either bring it to the dealer or use MapEV Diag to scan the car and see what the underlying condition is.

Just because in your case the light indicated issue X does not mean that in any other case. There are hundreds of underlying issues that present as that error.

Btw, about your warranty - you could have just fitted the original rims on the car temporarily (unless you already sold them of course).

To extend the Approved there must be NF0 rated tyres on the car and original wheels...

sorry if it's off-topic, but are you 100% positive that you don't get to extend the approved warranty with non-NF0 tyres, even with original rims and tyres with OEM spec (i.e. OEM size, load and speed rating). Just out of curiosity - I will be changing my 21' summers next year and want to get hankook ION evo. I have those fitted on my other EV and they are incredibly good. But they are not NF0, although available on 305/30r21/exact OEM spec.

It would be nice to have rates of occurrence for these types of problems. I sometimes wonder if we all sense more problems because we hear about all of them on here. When I ask my local dealership techs, they don’t seem to think of Taycans coming in any more than any other cars (Denver market, decent sized). I figured I would get a sense when shopping for extended warranties, but even those folks don’t really mention anything specific other than just high cost Porsche techs and general higher cost in Taycan parts because of small rate of production. All that said, my darn cameras stopped working after the latest car wash, but were back working today…ugh.

My dealer said there has to be a photo of the tyres and they also have to enter the thread depth. While they can "round up" the thread depth a little, they can do nothing about the tyre photo that has to be there.

They said the same thing to me. They have to supply pictures of the original tyres and rims. I still hav an original winter set ... I will see what the dealer says about my displayed error but it seems there are 3 main culprits behind a red electrical system error: HV battery / 12V battery of OBC which is unlikely for me since I have the 11kwh which is not prone to failure....
