Hello,

As the subject indicates, I am considering acquiring a 2022 Taycan 4S. My financial situation is relatively stable, and I currently drive a 2014 Lexus GS 350 with approximately 270,000 miles. I am contemplating replacing this vehicle or reducing its operational burden.

I have been researching ownership costs through various online resources and am seeking to understand the actual annual expenses associated with this vehicle. I've encountered figures suggesting an annual cost of around $10,000, excluding depreciation, but including insurance, extended warranty, electricity, and other related expenditures. I am keen to ascertain if this estimate aligns with the experiences of current owners or if there are opportunities for more cost-effective ownership. While I recognize that Porsche ownership entails a certain level of investment, I would greatly appreciate insights into your actual annual expenses. Thank you.

We can help you with that but need to know what dealer you plan to use for servicing and full details on the build (window sticker) with service history of the example and ideally run the VIN against the recall database to see what is outstanding. Also, we will need miles driven, date delivered, etc.

Cost of ownership to me: Insurance (highly variable based on many factors), Scheduled maintenance (most expensive part and varies from dealer to dealer due to set hourly rates), and Tires, with cost of electricity if charging at home varies greatly but normal rate is 15 cents per kWh for me, with public charging where I am in a 48 cents per kWh before some tax, I am sure.

As mentioned insurance is variable depending on age, driving record, etc. but I pay around $2000 a year for my 2022 here in southern California. It's my wife's daily driver and she puts 12-15k miles per year on the car and we spend about $50-60 per month on home charging during super off peak hours. New tires every 1.5-2 years at about 2K, along with a 2 year and 4 year service which are each about 2k each at the dealer. Other than that there is not much maintenance. My car is CPO +1 and I will likely get an extended warranty when the CPO is up in 3 years. I've had the car about a year, had zero issues with it and love it.

I can provide a sample.
I’ve owned my 2021 for about a year now, charging was free for a few months.
I’ve put about 10,000 miles on the car. The 20” new michelins have been worn by 2/32”, so probably be changing at 20-25,000 miles or about 2 year intervals.
I have 2 more years of warranty as the CPO portion picks up when the primary warranty is exhausted.
The recent 4 year service was about $800 at my dealer, I had changed the wiper blades and cabin air filter which cost me about $125. They did insist on doing the brake fluid flush ($200 of the $800) although I had them do the WPK0 recall about 9 months ago.
I have the PSCB surface coated brakes, this can end up being pricey if the rotors require replacement.
I have had a 1 time issue with my 360 camera system which is allegedly due to a cable fitting on the front facing camera. The dealership is very thorough however and replaced all the cameras as well as the module, which all had to be ordered.
The issue did not return.
I’ve also experienced an issue whereby I intermittently (multi-hour road trip) get a “take over steering” warning without innodrive active. This is also an extensive fix involving a windshield mounted camera and new cables, and not really sure what else.
They do take everything very seriously and have never said things like “they all do that”. So that is nice.
The 2 fixes would likely fall into the $12,000 range, so if it wasn’t covered by warranty, I’d live with the occasional glitch, or try a much simpler fix myself.
Note at the 6 year mark they recommend replacing the brake pads on the PSCB brakes, probably $600 in parts.
As far as reliability, I find it great, the issues I’ve experienced I’d consider pretty minor annoyances. The car reliably charges, the ride/handling/steering is really exceptional. It’s my favorite car so far, and I’ve had a lot of cars. I was really looking for a 991.2 and had test driven one, and I liked it, but a Taycan test drive ruined my desire for a 911.
The big downside of the Taycan common to all EVs is the depreciation. The 911 I had not bought is now worth more, while the Taycan has depreciated.

You can always say no. In my case I asked, they just confirmed that they did a complete flush while doing the break lines recall, so no need to do it again. I can swap my own cabin filter or wipers, or tires (I have 3 sets, so they wear slow), so 2 year service wasn't even necessary, even though I had a prepaid one included with my car. Hopefully I can use the prepaid 2-year service at 4-years.

Thanks for the reply. I am interested in the fixed cost .. let say nothing went wrong, how much do you spend on the car such as insurance and warranty and etc..

I got quoted for 3.2k a year for car insurance. I have no driving accident and i am 48 y/0. So you have a fix cost of 5k a year right. 2k insurance, 1k tire average, extended warranty?

That is way too high for insurance, so something is not right there. So you are on the right track on the costs with inputs from others spot on. Extended warranty we all agree is a must, so quote that. All in all, sounds like a really expensive fixed cost situation to enjoy a dated Taycan. I would reconsider and look at other options such as GTS, Turbo, etc. that have depreciated heavily to get a little more out of your fixed costs.

how many miles are people getting out of tires here? are they higher treadwear summers or more moderate all-seasons?

Oh, interesting. I had previously heard that this was to do with "German roads don't have long straight sections like the US has" and hence only fixable by driving on curvy roads. Don't suppose you know the work order code for this fix so I can ask my dealer about it?

Thanks... I hope more people will post their cost so I can get a sense. Eventhough we live in different counties...

Yea, I think that sounds about right. I’ve had Wawanesa insurance for about 30 years and as long as you have a good driving record they have great rates.

Sergy! Check your electricity rates. I have a sales rep living in Indy who drives an EV (Tesla unfortunately) and I paid to have a wall charger installed on a separate meter in her garage. The result is that her Indy utility company sells her juice, overnight, at the special EV rate of $0.01/kWh. It is so cheap that after three or four years, she has never bothered to include electricity costs on her expense report (a sharp contrast to her ICE driving brethren). I don't remember the cost to put in the separate meter (maybe $1000) and I do not know who provides her utilities, but it is worth looking into if you are currently paying $0.15/kWh.
