I have absolutely nothing against giving people options, especially when it's solvable by software with already existing hardware and makes somebody happy, comment still hilarious though :)

For those complaining, consider it could be worse - they could be spending their engineering money on self driving instead

Ignoring the gimmick, it's good news that there will/might be a 2027 refresh, presumably a J1.3, which suggests they haven't given up completely on the Taycan

Most people wouldn't even want a Porsche if it's not for Taycan. So I think this is only a beginning.

It's just a software change, there is not going to be any refresh so soon. The pre-FL was sold from MY20 to MY24, the FL will most likely be sold from MY25 to MY28.
They are not going to do a FL to sell it for 2 years and then make a new car.

Paddles behind the steering wheel aren't software-only

They are already there on the GTS and the GT since MY25. So they can just fit the part to the others.
But yeah it's probably never coming to anything before MY27.

I wouldn’t say most people, but I bought a Taycan because it’s a Porsche and electric. I’ve been waiting for the 718EV but needed a car. I might one day get a classic 911 when my kids are grown up but short of that, I’ll never own a gas car again. Definitely a contingent of Taycan owners that are very happy to own a Porsche but wouldn’t have gotten a Panamera or other gas model.

Just to make it clear. It is not only about the sound but the shifting feel. It will simulate the shifts by an 'interrupted" pull on upshifts and engine brake under downshift, mimicking how the PDK works. Testers as Andreas Preuninger (head of GT development) said it is almost impossible to make a diff between real PDK and future "fake shift Taycan". The final stages of the developments were made by the team who tuned the PDK system as well to make the feel as close as possible.
This will need serious software mods, not only the sound and paddles on the steering wheel.

Cutting power to the motors and braking when downshifting via Regen is hardly "serious software mods"

It will need to make to feel different on every "rpm", every speed, synchronizing it with the sound etc. to make it realistic is not an easy work.

It is more than a sound tune plus two paddles, what I wanted to say.

It does not need any "serious" mods, just a new firmware for ASG with some more logic and then calibration of that logic. Really no big deal to add that, especially when you have the full source code and can just compile (or rather generate) a new module.

I could add something like that to the existing ASG in assembler. Of course I couldn't do anything with the sound, since I don't have access to that.
But yeah this is trivial compared to new hardware.

All you need is to program the "shiftpoints", the cut profiles (probably with 3d map), and then extra 3d map for regen based on motor rpm + gear.

Though knowing the Germans they'll probably overcomplicate it and create a modelled ICE RPM + gear and do it off of that.

Porsche calls it "Virtual Transmission" so it will be more than that for sure.

To Porsche who is not able to make a navigation that is not freezing frequently, PCM that stands up under acceptable time, making APP where the seat/ steering wheel heating is tunable individually etc. every software work is "serious".

Again: I wanted to reflect on that, it is not only sound and paddles but added mechanical feel as well mimicking PDK.

Don't compare the script kiddies doing the PCM app to the firmware engineers!
From powertrain engineering and calibration perspective the Taycan is one of the best cars in the world.

The whole "virtual transmission" is extremely easy to implement. Everything already exists in the ASG to do that, just need a simple software module.
You can call it whatever you like, all that stuff doing bouncing off the limiter or up/downshifting is super easy to do, model and test compared to other challenges. All you need is cut the electric power somewhat with a defined filter curve and you get exactly the same feeling...
From modelling perspective if you want it similar to an engine you just implement a virtual torque per fake "ignition" event, and then you can do a rotating cut pattern like on a fuel cut limiter, which can imitate an engine with any amount of cylinders bouncing off the rev limiter.

Then you just add some fake gears and blend one of the gear shiftpoints with the real shiftpoint. Again all done in software in the ASG. There's tons of free space in the ASG and the processor is way overkill for what it's doing now, so no problem there.

Of course it's not going to be done in a day, but it's nothing serious.

Thanks to explain.
I already do downshift: under braking (sport or sport+) letting to fall the speed below 60 km/h releasing a brake pedal for a moment, and continuing the braking under the 1st gear. Magic🙂
