Looks like solid state batteries are finally here, hopefully it will trickle down to many EVs like the next gen Taycan ASAP
Must watch -
Color me skeptical.

Add this to the list of hundreds of YouTube videos of heads of tech companies claiming breakthroughs and a lot of promises.

Call me back when it’s been 3rd party tested and verified as well as available for sale.

Keep in mind the source of the above video. They act like “unsprung weight” doesn’t matter.

Wow, when they make claims, they really just go for it.

Apparently they also claim it’s good for 100,000 charging cycles.

With the 217 mile range of the bike they’re putting it it…… that’s 21,000,000 miles.

They need to get this thing out of the lab and into the real world so that reality can set in.

Since showed us already that the battery charges in 10 minutes, it would take them FORTY YEARs to even test that…… assuming 24 hours a day they charged in 10 min, discharged in 3 hours (equivalent of 70 mph with the 217 mile range).

My BS meter is growing. No one is driving 70mph for 24 hrs straight for 40 years. And no way that the biggest killer of batteries (time/age) wouldn’t affect it.

i guess you didn't watch to the end, they have 2 companies that already use it, Verge (EV Motorcycle) and Wave (skateboard platform)

Both are “future products” and neither has been tested to last 21 million miles.

When tech companies make outlandish claims that sound like nonsense, so far they’ve all been nonsense.

But if this is reality…… it will be the first.

But no, I don’t trust those claims. So many videos from companies claiming a breakthrough in solid state have been made in recent years. They seem more like science fiction and aimed at trying to con investors into buying their stock.

As both companies are headquartered in Estonia and the company records of ALL companies in Estonia are public, I can tell you the following:
1. Both companies (Donut Lab and Verge) have Finnish people on the board.
2. Both companies share a board member (same person).
3. Both companies ultimate beneficiaries share the same last name (Lehtimäki), high chance they are related.
4. The Estonian branch of Verge Motorcycles is very cash flow negative (-8mm in 2023 and -10mm in 2024). The annual report for 2024 was saying that they need funding to continue operations and have matured debt that they are unable to pay back.

Does it mean the whole thing is a dud? No, but it does look quite fishy.

Well they have retail store (right next to the Sony/honda afeela store) at the mall next to where I live, I always thought it’s a vaporcycle, but now it seems more impressive and real.
I hope the big companies are working on the same thing and it’s going to be released in the next gen cars.

Back to what I’d like to see next gen:

  1. Go back to the tear drop headlights from J1. I love the look and there is nothing else like it on the roads.
  2. Better backup camera.
  3. Switches vice touch controls for climate controls and radio.
  4. Larger screen for the GPS. I like the center stack design on the new Cayenne.
  5. CCS and NACS charging ports on opposite sides of the car. Many newer chargers I’ve seen now have both cable options. This would be helpful if arriving at a busy station with only one or the other.
  6. Fix the center console, it feels like it was designed by committee.
  7. Know it’s already a large vehicle, but a couple more inches in the storage area of the CT would allow multiple golf clubs to be stored front-to-back.
  8. Obviously greater range and modern battery chemistry (solid state?) might lead to a weight reduction and even faster charging times.

Fixed it for you.

Hub motor is real, and may actually work ok for a motorcycle. I don’t want a hub motor in a car. Unsprung weight and risk of damage are enough to make it a “hard no.”

It’s the solid state battery part and the outlandish claims that are suspect.
