My method for monitoring semi-real time availability

I learned when monitoring via this method, the data does not refresh in real time on the screen. But after you exit and return to this screen, it refreshes the data.

Stop 3: Upland

We elected to change the stop to Upland after realizing the wait times for food at Santa Anita was 90 minutes. ( Goal was to arrive at friends house at 9:30).

So we planned a stop at Upland and eat at a quick dining in the strip mall.

61.76 kw in 37 minutes, another balanced charger, with output in the 150-175 kw range.

Also with the current EA plan, the slower speed caused me to charge past the 30 minute complimentary time frame.

This was the final charging stop and thus far it every single stop despite charging at 175kw speeds, the car was almost always ready before we were, especially when we were eating food.

Final stop in Desert Hot Springs home. I brought a level 1 charger and even at 1.5 kws, it charged the car from 60 to 75% in 12 hours. This allowed me to go about my day without thinking about charging until at my hotel destination at the end of the day.

When DCFC works well, it's pretty amazing - like you, our cars are generally ready to leave about when or just before its occupants are.

Why EA Harris ranch and not EA Kettleman ? there are 8-10 chargers there and they are not shared, they go to 350 each.

A few reasons:

1. afraid of over crowding
2. limited food option (Denny's and Taco), and
3. my arrival was estimated at 5%

The mexican restaurant there right next to the charger is pretty good, and there are many other options like subway, sturbucks and others, 5% makes sense!

I use Kettlemen if I'm really low SOC and will charge to 100%, if there is no line out of respect for other drivers.
I'll go across the street to BrovoFarms.

800v cars charge so fast that you can get back to the car fast enough though

My method for monitoring semi-real time availability

A similar monitoring method when I take a trip is that I wish the EV providers (Electrify America, ChargePoint, etc.) would figure out how to detect if a queue of cars is waiting. 1/6 is a guess of a possible queue of cars waiting. I heard that Tesla assigns slots when there is a queue, but I'm not sure if it is implemented. Can Tesla owners here who own a Taycan comment on this? Thanks!

See my notes above. There are data lag issues monitoring this way too.

Currently I'm still in Palm Springs. On Thursday, we visited Joshua Tree. Here are some photos of the car in the park. We lucked out with the weather, it was 65 degrees and overcast.

I started the day with 75% charge and exited the park with 20%. While the navigation reported I would make it back to LA Quinta with 10%, I elected to visit the Rivian charge lounge in Joshua Tree for a short charge.

I'm happy to report the charge cables and bump stops were of sufficient length for the car. Using the Lectron NACS-CCS adapter, I charged 16 kw in 5 minutes ($10).

We elected to eat dinner in town. Coincidentally, the La Quinta EA and the restaurant was in the same complex. This station was a mess. The CHadeMo station was poorly configured and I had to maneuver two different ways to access the plug to learn that I could not activate the session. Switching to another stall, the unit errored after 5 minutes. I replugged and luckily did not incur the error again. However, this unit did not charge faster than 90kws. Ironically, slower charging is what I needed as I was dining and did not want to interrupt my dinner to move the car. We finished dinner and the car finished with 99%.

Car looks great!

Joshua Tree is a very cool spot.

Bummer about that EA station. We’ve never actually tried that one - the only “local” one we’ve used is in Indio north of I-10. No issues there the few times we used it…but OTOH there’s not much in the way of good eats out there either…

I tentatively plan to go to Porsche Cars and Coffee at Porsche Palm Springs on Saturday morning. The plan is to pack up the entire car check out of the hotel and go to Cars and Coffee, and then go straight home.

We'll see if we can get up in time. Lol
