6 months and 11k miles in my J1.2 ST Turbo on 21” Aero wheels I thought I’d share some more thoughts and experiences as a high miler. For comparison I’ve come from a J1 CT 4S on 20” Aero wheels and covered around 55k miles in it.
Range is improved, comfortably by +30% despite moving up to Turbo from 4S, half of this from the bigger battery, half from improved efficiency (new rear motor, power electronics, battery and increased regen).
Cold weather range drop off is less severe c. 10% vs 20% in J1
Longer distances and road tips with DC fast charging are improved for several reasons, not just the +30% range.
PCM is slicker and faster, not a huge change but enough to make it feel better.
The new battery display in the instrument cluster is helpful, it is my default. As well as battery SoC and temp it tells you the expected DC charge rate (based on SoC and battery temp), if the battery is being pre-conditioned and if the DC charger is limiting your charge or not.
‘ECO’ air conditioning is now clearly different to ‘Normal’ mode and noticeably slower to heat the cabin. In my J1 I could hardly tell a difference between the two modes. With the increased range I don’t bother using ‘ECO’ any longer. The new heating/cooling system itself is a little nosier on max cabin heating or battery cooling during DC charging, you can hear it whirring (quietly) from inside the cabin, was pretty much silent in J1 in any condition.
Matrix HD LEDs are amazing. I’m surprised at how much better they are over previous generation top spec matrix LEDs with PDSL which were excellent. Overall brightness, range, speed of reaction and the ‘motorway lane guidance’ mode are great. The little animations at start and stop are cool too.
Exterior of the turbo I really like, feels newer/fresher at the front, but appreciate this is subjective.
Coming from a 4S to a J1.2 Turbo, the power is mind boggling, 884hp it is too much, too fast for the road - I never thought I’d say that. Push-to-pass is fun but cannot use it for more than about 3 or 4 seconds of full power. I rarely use it as the standard power level is immense. One limitation in colder climates is that it only works if battery is +10c. Putting into sport+ soon warms the battery to 10c.
Ride and handling is sublime, a big improvement but I have Active Ride so not a direct comparison to my old car.
Sport sound is not as good, I think they removed some of the external speakers used in the J1 system and now pipe it via the stereo, the sound has less depth and is even more false and artificial.
The Bose sounded better in my J1, doubt they’d have changed this, but it does not sound the same.
Cabin noise increased due to the metal roof in my J1.2 (vs glass in the J1) and the Hankook tyres (vs Pirelli in J1). The tyres are wearing well but are noisy (may also be the 21” vs 20” but they are the same width). Note this is a spec related option choice vs my J1, not a platform difference. I do miss the near silence of my J1.
I wish I’d optioned surround view, I now have a 1990’s quality reverse camera on a +£150k car.
Sadly, reliability is not off to a great start, had a new front strut fitted and the other one now needs done (knocking noises, not complete failure) and the boot has also stopped closing. Heater and battery are ok….. so far.
Overall I am very pleased with the J1.2, it is a clear and useful improvement for anyone doing longer trips and high miles in particular.

- Faster peak charging rate
- Improved and ’taller’ charging curve. No need to run the run a low SoC to exploit the fastest charging speeds, it’s easier to simply top up whenever so more flexible. For example, my old strategy was largely to run down to 5-10% (under 25%) to get the fast charge rate, however there was always a risk that the charger would be busy or broken, in J1.2 charging anywhere under 50/60% gets very high charging speeds.
- Lower battery temp for peak charging speed, c. 16c vs 35c, means less power and range wasted to pre-heat the battery.
- Improved charging planner, just a bit faster and easier to use.
