@69Mach390 Don't be so dismissive. YASA (Mercedes) are supplying yokeless motors to, inter alia, Ferrari which bolt straight on to the output shaft of the combustion engine. Power to weight ratio very high. DeepDrive does one better (IMO) - yokeless and uses the stator to propel two rotors. Better power to weight still. These things are insanely powerfull, yet when you divide by four corners, you don't need so much power in each corner. So you can probably save some more weight.
Your are of course right on the unsprung mass but consider the upshots. One Chinese manufacturer (I forget which) has presented a vehicle with in-wheel motors that can park perfectly in parallel (by angling the wheels 90 degrees).
