I have a 2020 Taycan Turbo - have owned it for 2 years and have recently noticed when driving in the rain, the brakes become very weak to the point, where at times, it feels unsafe. I took the car to my local Porsche dealership who told me that my brakes look fine and this is typical for cars with brake regeneration. Anyone else out there experience problems with their brakes when driving in the rain?

Dont trust the dealer.

You need to drive another Taycan owners car (and vice versa) in the rain to compare.
Maybe reach out here, and see if there is anyone local to you?

nope but if not applied the brakes to 'dry' the rotors then initial bite will be low if braking hard (not relying on recuperation (motor braking)) as per most other cars.

Your service advisor is wrong. I'll assume uninformed rather than just blowing off your concerns. Braking is always initially by regen. Regen should not know the difference wet or dry. If there is a difference something is getting wet and not functioning as it should. You don't say if the pedal gets soft, has long travel, or just requires more pressure. Does it have to be raining or do you experience the problem on wet roads. Have you had the front brake hoses replaced and the PSM module reprogrammed? Low tread on summer tires and the traction control could be limiting slip (Pittsburgh temps at this time of year and summer tires do not make for great traction). Whatever the reason, other than traction being limited by the tires, there is no way you should be experiencing significantly different braking in the rain. Pick a wet day and demo it for the dealership.

Emergency braking comes to mind though so split second recuperation then rotors for maximum braking force

Very possible. Wet rotors do not stop very well initially, but braking usually goes back to normal after one wheel rotation and the water is wiped clear. Hard to know what to say to the OP's complaint as details are missing. He just says "driving in the rain".

did it happen while driving downtown ? on highway ?

I had to drive a few days ago more than 500mi under heavy rain (on highway): brakes were fine, even during emergency situations

If you have ceramic brakes, they're much worse than steel, initially, in the rain...when they kick in, of course.

not enough information for us to advise.

  1. What brake type ? Steel, PSCB, PCCB?
  2. how many miles on rotor and pads?
  3. replaced rotors and pads? If so when?
  4. When was last brake fluid replacement?
  5. Did you complete the brake line/hose recall?

Describe "very weak". Is the initial bite not hard? What about sustained braking pressure?

I can tell you after a touch-less carwash my brakes (PSCB) a really unsafe until I pump them a few times and then they seem to be fine. I had a loaner with regular steel brakes and they were perfectly normal after using the same car wash. This has never happened with my 991 with ceramic brakes, but I can tell you I never put that car in an automatic car wash!! Hope that helps. I told the service advisor and the hope was that the brake recall would fix the problem. The recall repair did help the overall feel, but not the heavy water issue. (2020 Turbo).

Also depends on outside temperature and time since last hard braking (e.g. if you drove on a wet highway for 60 miles without much braking, it's wet and near freezing outside, the rotors can build up a layer of icy water).

Same here with PSCBs after washing the car too. It seems like any soap solution need to be removed with a heavy breaking session on these rotors

Also have PSCB and when they are wet and “first” braking they do not stop. Car just keeps rolling. Need to pump the brakes to dry and warm up rotors to get them to bite. Happens a lot pulling into a parking space rolling at slow speed go to hit brakes and they aren’t there.

I had the exact same problem and porsche denied there was a problem , just sold it back to them at a massive loss as it wasn’t worth the risk . I hope you can get a fix because it’s a nightmare , feels totally unsafe in the wet .
