Apologies if this is a dumb question. I drove from the UK to the alps for the season, prior to travel restrictions (used Ionity chargers all the way, really good). I have a 45 minute drive down the steep valley roads to get to main roads and towns etc The battery only gets to 2 deg C after the trip down, so no recuperation. I have type 2 charger in the car park in the resort. Is there a way of getting preheat to the battery either with or without the charger before I set off?

Set a new timer with departure time of your choice. Battery and interior will be pre-heated for that time. You can do it from the car / App / computer. I have mine set at 80% for daily driving, but if you go back on a long trip better to set to 100%. The amount of energy you can regenerate is lower when battery is full, but usage is better with warm battery (kWh/100 mi)

Does this actually heat the battery? I was under the impression it's just the cabin.

If you set a timer to charge the battery and preheat the car, the battery will be warm at departure. My battery is approx. +30C at departure when charging to 100% and preheating the car (21C), at below zero temps outside.
Got it. Probably more the charging doing it then? Good to know though. Cheers.

What charger are u using 3,6 kw or more? Are you able to fully (re)charge the battery after preheating and pre conditioning? In my X5 preheating was done with the HV battery and not with the EVSE itself.

You can also search specifically for charging stations for navigation. It will preheat the battery while driving and it will be ready for arrival at the charging station.

Could you comment on your trip? Would be really useful. Did you use a roof box? What was your typical range between charges. Did you do it in one or two days. How much range did you plan to have arriving at the resort.

I am getting my 4 CT half feb and wonder if I would dare taking it on a winter road trip after owning it for a week or two.

Thanks a lot I you want to share this info. Happy holidays !

This is using the internal 11kW AC charger at full effect, it will charge it up to 100% when using the timer function with preheating on.

And with the alarm issue I presume you have to set a time when leaving the car and you can’t use the app?
That really a pity. I hope they can come up with a solution because I really liked the remote pre heating function in the X5.

Possibly daft questions again here… does recuperation not work if the battery is cold? What is the minimum temperature for it to work?

And probably you will have to set maximum charge at 85% for example and pre condition in orde to store the energy because you can’t charge more than 100%. This will depend on the length of the descent. In my X5 I was able to charge 50% battery driving down hill 30 km (22 kWh battery).

Sure, but that wasn’t the question. The OP stated that he was getting no recouperation at 2 degree C. My question was whether there is a minimum temperature for recuperation to work

Yes sorry. I understood your question and that is also how I understood the earlier quote : energy recuperation is limited with a cold battery. Don’t know the answer. Would be good to know. I should have posted my question separate from yours.

Really? Mine doesn't do this. Preheating preheats the cabin and very slightly increases battery temp, but nowhere near the ideal 30°c ideal temp? Are you sure about this?
