After the Taycan the cayenne (well probably most things) just feels clumsy.

After spending a bit more time in the Cayenne today, it is a nice place to be and I was ready to say I may have judged it too soon. However, getting back into the Taycan this afternoon just reiterated my initially reaction, in that the ride in the Taycan is just so much more plush & supple

Anyone would think the Cayenne would have a more “luxurious ride’ but it doesn’t.

That said, I appreciate it’s not a direct rival, and should really be comparing it to other ice SUV’s.

The Cayenne wins in many other areas, but ride quality is certainly not one of them

I feel very much the same, for me an SUV is just not in the Porsche DNA. I could possibly say the same for the Taycan and Panamera. Which would leave currently 911 and 718. However why shouldn’t Porsche extend the brand and make some hay in the process. The legacy of Porsche is pretty much unrivalled and Cayenne and Macan have seen massive success, so good luck to those that want to drive an SUV and plug into some of the Porsche esprit de corps.
Both of these cars have and are in “Porsche’s DNA”

There is a lot more to Porsche than the 911 or the Boxster - and I don’t mean in their modern lineup. I do agree, though, that other models don’t fit the casual observer’s idea of “a Porsche”.

Regarding the Cayenne you have to order or request the air suspension with the five levels. That's what I ordered on my '14 and loved it. I understand the new '24 Cayenne has improved it more. Not sure how many levels. I've driven Cayennes to the highest forest service roads and to toughest trailheads in Washington State. In Ice storms and Blizzards. 30° below in 40mph NE winds in Montana with no problem.
The Cayenne also has so many more storage areas and cubbies. I can't even find a good place to put my sunglasses in the Taycan but I use the thin foward portion of the door pocket by the left door speaker. Everyone knows the center console storage is a joke when you can't even keep the cover open with any detente. Glove box is named correctly for what you can store in there. I put a microfiber towel in the Center console tunnel. That's about all that space could hold practically.
I will applaud the practicality of the hatchback and fold down seats in the CT. Seems as long as my Cayennes.

It seems to me that if you want a good 4-door car or estate car the choices are few and my choice still is a Taycan.

If you want an SUV rather than a car there are a vast number to choose from with a wide range of capabilities and driving dynamics. Even each manufacturer has a wide range of specs to suit different customers.

My brother is a retired farmer and has had SUVs all his life but his requirement is different to somebody who doesn't use it on gravel and grass.

The balance between "Sport" and "Utility" in such a vehicle is very dependant on the use case.

I struggle to see the Taycan and Cayenne as alternatives, personally, totally different.

apple vs pear from the same farm, I had the new Cayenne Couple PHEV for a weekend, and I really liked it, very comfortable ride quality and felt somewhat more spacious than the previous model, and it's a great family car for the road trips, am tempted to order one next to my Taycan, I will know after the 25th Macan EV premier.

I had a round about way to enjoy up with a Taycan.

I initially dismissed an EV, so ordered a new Cayenne E Hybrid in the spring which ended up arriving in the Autumn and after issues was bought back by Porsche within a few days of it arriving.

During which I bought an ex demo Taycan Turbo CT. Which today went in for a recall and I was given a Cayenne as a loaner.

I cannot express how much nicer the Taycan is to drive. The Cayenne’s drivetrain now feels dim whittled, clunky and slow.

The ride also manages to feel cumbersome and harsh at the same time. Compared to the Taycan which feels solid but smoother and just way more refiend

The whole way home I was so glad I went for the Taycan.

My wife has an X5 40i 2020 model and I actually think I’d take that over the Cayenne.
I have both. They’re different tools for different jobs. The Cayenne is my family long journey car. If I had to choose I’d bin the Taycan in a heartbeat. The Cayenne hybrid range is so short in my view it’s pointless. If you want a hybrid with usable range buy a MB or RR.

It will be interesting to see if the new Macan now has capacity for adult rear passengers

In the last 10 years, I went 997.1 - 987.2 - Taycan Turbo and Cayenne base - swap 718 GTS 4.0 for Taycan. Taycan/ Cayenne aren't in the same genre, really aren't comparable. An analogous post to the 718 Forum might go something like this:

I bought a 2020 Taycan Turbo with great expectations, but over the first three years of ownership, between the battery and charging issues, short range and a precipitous drop in value, I swapped it for a never-titled 2022 718GTS 4.0 Boxster. There is no comparison in the handling and ride. The Taycan handles well for a 6,000 pound car, but it is a 6,000 pound car and the Boxster just blows it out of the water in the twisties. I don't lioke visiting the gas station for city driving, but it's so nice to go 500 miles on a long trip without refueling and know that it's a 10 minute experience evey 500 miles vs. the better part of an hour every 250. Blah blah.

Boxster and Taycan don't belong in the same sentence either.

the new Cayenne delivers an 80+ km range with a bigger battery, during winter about 60 km that I experienced.
RR Vogue on papers says 110km on battery, quite tempted too, but I haven't driven it yet so can't verify that, also don't know if the overall quality of the new Vogue has gone better, i know that the new defender has a lot of electronic issues.

Having driven Cayenne loaners, I much prefer driving my wife's Audi Q8 eTron which is about the same size, costs significantly less but has better acceleration but about the same handling capabilities as the loaner Cayenne's I've had. Audi also has a bunch more features which the loaners were missing (available from Porsche but for even more $). Of course overall I prefer to drive the Taycan over either of them.

will see about that as the current Macan is small and the seats are not comfortable at all.
but I don't really need a 3rd EV, a PHEV is more practical for us.

I had a 2018 E-hybrid which could manage 20 miles on pure electric, which was enough for me around town. I don't see the point of more than 50 miles pure electric range in a Porsche hybrid- non-urban driving limited to just a third or so of the vehicle's full power seems like a waste of the car's sporting potential. The latest gen Cayenne hybrid has gained 50+kg, it seemed more sensible to me to switch to the lighter Taycan and get the full benefit of EV propulsion.

I test drove the RR Sport Hybrid, the JLR sales guy saw me step out of the Taycan and shook his head. For me it was a nice place to sit but once it starts moving uh oh! You're sailing a ship, rolling horribly when turning, diving under braking etc it's unpleasant, even under "Dynamic" settings. The salesman knew what I was going to say, he explained he had a Taycan driver try the Vogue and had the same reaction, tried to sell him a Sport as more dynamic but lost cause.
The Cayenne handles much better by comparison and the reliability of Range Rovers are well documented and true.

Taycan weigh 5,000 lbs.
However GVWR is 6200-6400lbs

Cayenne 4500-4800

718 gts 4.0 3200

Electric 718 will be 3750+, not all that far below base ICE Cayenne

It does have a longer wheelbase so I expect it will have more rear seat passenger room. This is due to the new platform to have more battery space in the skateboard configuration.
