Charging limits? New owner....

Hey folks,

New Taycan owner here. Set up a charging profile for 85% max on the hours of our cheap overnight charging (it was enabled, I disabled it in case it was the problem).

But now I find it keeps charging to 100% and I'm away for the week and left it plugged in (as I've done for years with a Tesla and it would just sit at 85% no problems).

What am I missing? Why is it overcharging?

Very confusing indeed - when 85% max doesn't mean 85% max!!!

It'll just have to sit at 100% for a week til I get back home. ???

I'll set it up as you say but I don't think it will be able to start charging at an earlier time as the charger is set to only go live at 00:30 til 0430. Rest of the time the car says charger in error.

It’s all very confusing, however in your set up, the car will charge to 85% once you plug it in, and then continue charging to 100% during your preferred charging time. If you want the car to charge mainly at a preferred charging time, you must use a timer in conjunction with a profile.

Here is what you need to do:

1. Create a new profile with the lowest minimum charge set at 25% (this is the lowest you can set it) Set your preferred charging times on that profile.

2. Create a new timer with a maximum charge set at 85%. Pick a time for your car to be ready at 85% charge. Usually at the end of your preferred charging time. In your case that is 04:30. Check the “charging” box inside the timer. Be sure preconditioning is unchecked. Check the box in the timer (inside the date setting)for daily charging so that it will repeat every day.

3. Once you have set that up. Make sure your new profile is checked as the active one. Uncheck any others. Make sure the timer you created is also checked and that no other timers are checked.

Now when you plug in your car, it will immediately charge to 25% (if it is under that charge level). Then it will stop. It will begin charging again at a time within your preferred charging period that will have it at 85% at 04:30. If it needs more time to reach 85% than your preferred period provides, it may start earlier. Each day that you are gone, it will make sure your car is at 85% at 04:30

My other electric is a KIA EV6..I setup charging (to 80%) in about 2 minutes. My Taycan took a lot of playing/experimentation and time but, finally, after a couple of frustrating days I got it to work. The German software engineer that designed that process needs to take a course in KISS !

You set a *minimum* charge of 85% there, not a maximum.
The only way to set a max charge is to use a timer.

EXACTLY!! Pretty awful bit if HMI. There was me thinking, yep this is brilliant and clear then wondering why my car is sat at 100% for a week.

Thanks for this thread; I was wondering why on public chargers I was getting to 100% - like the OP I set my profile at 85% as a min not realising the crazy logic there. No matter how great the car is, it is the gift that keeps on giving….

As an aside, my home charging setup pairs with the car and Octopus energy so I can set the max easily on its own app, which seems to override the Porsche app and leave it to find the cheapest/best times to do this at the cheap rate which the simplicity I like.

Public charging- when using DC charging both profiles and timers are ignored.

Public charging - when using AC charging the opposite is true unless you tap Direct Charge.

Octopus and Ovo talk to the PCM directly and bypass existing profiles and timers to create their own. Personal ones should be disabled to avoid conflict.

Lots of guidance on this topic (4 years worth) on this forum if you search.

Profikes have a minimum setting (even labelled as such in the app so no ambiguity) and are generally intended to ensure that your car always has the minimum value you set (typically 25%) in case you need to make unplanned use of the car for example. Charging occurs immediately if your current battery charge is below the minimum you have set and then depending on other settings will pause when the minimum has been reached

These other settings are typically managed by the Timer and this is where you would set your Target charge to say 85%.

Profiles and Timers therefore work together to control your charging session..

My advice for trouble and stress free home charging is to always use both unless using Ovo Charge Anytime or Octopus equivalent.

Note that there are two types of profiles - General and Location based. The latter is handy if you AC charge st regular locations but with different settings. Car will automatically select the correct profile based on your location..

Advise to read the manual on this to get more detail.

if you have set a schedule on your EVSE to Only allow charging in the cheap period, then you can do the following:

disable all timers
Set Profile to 85%
Important - set profile mode to optimised charging (not preferred time!)

then it shouldn’t complain about not being able to reach target and will only ever charge in your cheap window.

In my experience search functions on forums are pretty awful but I'll give it a go.

It was a quick ask for help as I'm away from home and the car is obviously setup wrong and overcharging. Hence the quick post.

Some really great how tos on the reply so definitely worth it.

The manual is very "German".

It's about as clear as mud and really, with good HMI, it absolutely shouldn't be needed.

Anyway much to learn. Looking forward to getting back home and driving the thing!
