I find myself enjoying Normal drive mode more over Sport or Sport+, regardless of any setting related to ride height or chassis setting. I can easily set chassis and height the same in any mode I select, the only reason I tend to enjoy Normal more is the (IMO) poorly implemented (or rather should never had been implemented) transmission. It’s so noisy and clunky.

When driving in the 0-60mph spectrum which is most of the city driving I do, in Sport mode there are so many noticeable gear changes. The upshift when going over 45mph, then the downshift when lifting the brake pedal and resuming drive at very low speeds. I can hear them all when not playing any music, and the sound/feel is rather unpleasant.

I don’t know if this is a common thing, but would like to hear what others think. I also hate the fact that flooring it in Normal kicks down to first gear and that specific transition is anything but smooth, more like a jolt. Like, every drive mode has compromises IMO, all related to that transmission. Meh…

This is transmission logic and there is a graph somewhere that shows shift points conditions.
However, I do not notice and not bothered by it. I expect a downshift if pushing the car in Normal.

I do not think what you are describing matches this logic.

Yes. I’m well aware of how the transmission is supposed to behave between drive modes. I guess my main gripe is that in my view, it’s a poor implementation. But from your post, seems like you don’t even feel yours shifting so I wonder if I’m one of only a few with this issue.

That is exactly my point, something may not be right. Which Taycan do you have since there are differences in shift logic if it is a RWD vs. AWD. However, I do not remember an instance of an issue with transmission on this forum besides stating the expected jolt when downshifting in Normal mode. Any other shifting at highway speeds is not perceptible to be bothersome like it is really shifting hard or unexpected. Most would agree that the implementation is spot on with rationale behind it and considered a premium vs. single speed EVs like Macan EV - boring. Why do you think they are copying Ionic with now fake gear shifts in 2027. I hope we are not getting a speaker system for exhaust like the Charger EV - yes, speaker mounted to the back where exhaust was.

98% of the time I drive in normal mode, which actually is a shame.
Mainly because I have a bit of gearbox-whine/drone in the 40-50 mph range, so when driving in sport at those speeds I find myself pushing over 55 mph for a second just to make it change to 2nd gear so the noise is gone.

When driving very slow in normal mode, then flooring it, there's a delay (that feels a little bit too long for my taste) because the gearbox needs to downshift ... at that point it can be a bit clunky.
Usually my downshifts are rather smooth (except when flooring it from 0 in normal mode), upshifts vary a bit but never 100% smooth. I think it shifts better when you keep on accelerating compared to when you happen to just cross the speed where it shifts.

My car is a 2022 4S, PB+ and Perf Package.

I too hear a slight drone in the same situation you described, though in my case it is not as bothersome.

The main thing that bothers me from what I have described is the situation when I’m already in second gear, then coming to a stop (say a red light) the car won’t downshift at 30mph and instead hold second gear until the stop. If I come to a full stop, then when I get moving again it starts in first gear and I don’t notice any gear shift (car as stationary, the gear shift is clean so makes sense). But instead if let’s say I’m coming to a stop and when below 10mph I have to get moving again (green light) then the downshift to first is rough like a clunk-thump type of noise.

This is a defect of the gearbox input shaft bearing and is fixed under warranty. It will only get worse.
On cars that don't have the defect it's completely silent.

60mph in a city sounds like a "you" problem ;)
That said if you want to have 1st gear for longer then that's doable in sport, and when I remap the ASG I also change the shiftpoints.

I too hear a slight drone in the same situation you described, though in my case it is not as bothersome.
Again, defect that is fixed under warranty.
On cars that do not have the defect the shifts are silent, you should not notice them sound wise.

I know exactly what you are talking about because I had the same problem on my Turbo S. Other cars were completely quiet that I tested.

Are you saying that the drone and clunk noise when gear shifts are related? Note that in my case the droning is aaaalmost inaudible.

Should be largely imperceptable so could be something is awry.

When in 1st gear driving at exactly 50mph with rear seats down, I hear a very high pitched whine, at a frequency that not all my passengers can even hear. With rear seats up, it's muffled so I cannot hear it. I don't think Porsche would qualify this as a defect. Any way to diagnose it through some logged values available via PIWIS?

It is 100% a defect. No you can't log anything. Audio file goes to Porsche (or a full test with something called a Pico tester) and they authorize a gearbox replacement.

You can also fix it by changing the input shaft bearing in the gearbox, can also buy a generic one...

You should not have any drone noise. The reason you are perceiving all this is because you have the gearbox whine and as it shifts the motor RPM changes and you hear a change in frequency.

It's a common fault on these cars and not normal. The cars that don't have the fault are completely and I mean completely silent.

not an expert like the guys here, 1st sports car (MY20 Turbo), been driving it almost 3 weeks, I have 0 "noise", nothing like what you reported.
If I hit the floor hard, you can "feel" the gear, but you don't "hear" it.
Hope that helps.

You can hear the "whine" if you accelerate in Sport/Sport Plus up to 75-85km/h (just before the upshift) and release the throttle (engine brake).
