This was predictable and inevitable.

I said this 4 years ago when every manufacturer had the same idea at the same time- let’s build a $50-75k midsize EV crossover. The market flooded with dozens of models at the same time for a growing, but still small market of buyers.

You can only accept losses for so long before pivoting your business.

Publicly traded companies have 1 job- make profits for shareholders. This wasn’t the way.

The EV market as a whole isn’t growing as quickly as the number of models. But it should still continue to grow.

These harsh realities will force manufacturers to do what they should have done in the first place- build better cars at a price that both consumers will pay and will make them a profit. Without those things- it’s a business model doomed to failure.

This is very misleading, they are not cancelling F-150 lightning completely. They will add gasoline generator to it that would charge the EV powertrain if needed to reach 700 mile range. This is the new variant of a hybrid called EREV that we need to start learning about. This is a customer driven shift:

According to the official Ford person on the Lightning forum there will be no 2026 Lightning and the 2027 is EREV only.

It may be semantics, but many consider the EREV to be a “hybrid” and not really an EV.

I think this is a good move personally, but still think they should keep the Lightning EV as a sport truck variant.

China is going to keep plugging away producing quality vehicles and more and more affordable pricing that will find there homes in Europe and elsewhere and we will be in the exact same place we were when we ignored Datsun and Toyota.

And they’ll keep doing so using questionable labor and questionable currency practices.

Not wanting Chinese EV cars here has little to do with the cars themselves and has been blocked by the last two Presidents.

So sad to see that happening in front of our eyes. This is anti progress. Thank you to our new god without naming him.

It’s easy to blame recent policies for the EV sales drop the last few months.

But for the first half of 2025, EV sales stalled and were only up 4% year over year.

Actually pretty easy to argue that EV demand completely stalled in the US over the last few YEARS. Take away the tax credits and it just compounds the issue.

Despite significantly more models and prices dropping significantly over the last 3 years, sales have barely changed. That tells me that demand is super weak if you can’t increase the quantity demanded with a drop in price (really significant drops if you adjust for inflation). The EV I bought in 2021 for $70k new you can buy in the low $50k range now. Adjusted for inflation it would be like $86k today. That’s a HUGE price drop.

And when you compare sales per model (instead of total sales) it looks even worse. Flat demand but more models = a lot of models getting cancelled.

Wouldn't a serial hybrid f-150 with 80-70kwh battery be better then pure ev for the market?
i sitll belive that they will be a new platform for a truck ev that will not be the F150 brand but something like the ranger/maverick.
The ranger was one of the first EV trucks at 1997 with 26kwh battery!

Yes.

But maybe the biggest hurdle for this setup will be getting the market to understand what it is, how it works, and be brave enough to buy one.

Pretty much anyone could buy a serial hybrid and it fixes all the naysayers complaints and questions about EVs.

No DC infrastructure needed. Charge at home and use gas on the rare situations you drive far from home.

It’s the “car for everyone.” Plus it drives like an EV (much better than a normal hybrid).

I always thought the Chevy Volt was a better idea than a Toyota Prius.
