Last week just before arriving home my car made a strange noise in the downshift. Drove the last mile and parked the car. The car wouldt go in park and gave an error that I should park the car and ask for assistance (or something similar).

After inspection it turns out the gearbox broke and needs to be replaced. They told me its a first for them (lucky me....) and they will send the unit to Germany. The car still has warrenty so it wont cost me anything. Total cost would have been around 10.000 euros otherwise. On the bright side, they gave me a nice Taycan CT 4s, that I can use the next two weeks which is better for wintersport :)

The whole experience makes me think about extending the warrenty when it expires in 6 months time. Did someone hear of this before? What do you think about extending the warrenty?

Chap had an issue with a shift actuator or similar as I recall. There was a thread about it.

Kinda answers itself, don't you think. Since this is the Taycan first gen, I wouldn't dare it without warranty..

I wouldn’t own a car like this without a valid warranty
This is one of the reasons I have an operational renting for this car. Everything is covered for the next four years. If I want I can buy it in 4 years. I don’t think I will. More because of warranty and having a new car. I would definitely extend the warranty for the entire ownership.

This thread suggests that the vehicle has some sort of inherent gearbox issue. Is that really the case?

For me it was more in general with this technological advances and expensive vehicles not specifically the gearbox. I did the same for my X5 45e before that. Lots of expensive and possible fragile parts. Like the laser lights I had on the X5. They cost a fortune.

Understood. Anything but the most basic of new vehIcles comes with a certain level of complexity that can be a challenge to manage over the vehicle’s life cycle. It’s one of the reasons I let my daily drivers go before they come off of manufacturers warranty.

Unlucky for sure. And I'd certainly consider an extended warranty, if you're thinking about holding onto the car for a significant period of time (e.g., has your heater failed?).

Generally speaking, it seems EV's should have less issues over the long-term and after the manufacturer's warranty, given less moving parts and systems in comparison to ICE vehicles. Still early days... with only Teslas (3 & S in particular) providing enough long-term volume data / experience to-date.

The X is arguably their most complex car esp with the door mechanisms. Air suspension. Etc.

3’s are volume go karts in comparison.

Its a 2021 RWD with 28.000km on it.
Think you’re looking at a couple of months off the road to get parts to be fair. One chap (think he was in the states) was waiting around 9 weeks
