Taycan Gen 2 4S – 12,189 miles and a big improvement over my Gen 1


Thought I’d share my experience after putting 12,189 miles on my Gen 2 Taycan 4S Black Edition.


I bought the Gen 2 in November 2025, and I’ve been genuinely surprised by how much better the efficiency and real-world range are compared with my previous Gen 1.


My Gen 2 experience


After 12,189 miles:

• Model: Taycan 4S Gen 2 Black Edition
• Purchased: November 2025
• Miles covered: 12,189
• Average consumption: 3.1 mi/kWh
• Full-charge range: 300+ miles

That 3.1 mi/kWh figure is my overall average, rather than a best-case journey figure, which is why I think it’s particularly interesting.


Compared with my previous Gen 1


I previously owned a Gen 1 Taycan, and if I’m being completely honest, it wasn’t anywhere near as good in terms of range and efficiency.


With the Gen 1, I was typically seeing around 210–220 miles maximum on a full charge.


With the Gen 2, I’m now seeing in excess of 300 miles on a full charge.


That’s a difference of roughly 80–90+ miles of usable range, which is a pretty significant improvement in my experience.


My overall impression


The biggest surprise for me hasn’t actually been the performance — it’s how much more usable the Gen 2 is as an everyday EV.


Getting 3.1 mi/kWh over more than 12,000 miles, while also having a 300+ mile indicated range, makes a noticeable difference to how often I’m thinking about charging.


I appreciate that range and consumption will vary massively depending on speed, temperature, wheels, tyres, driving style and route, so I’m not suggesting everyone should expect exactly the same figures.


But having owned both generations back-to-back, the difference is very noticeable to me.

The infotainment system in my opinion is better, the regen is a lot better in GEN2 also I feel the ride has slightly improved. I really liked the gen 1 but I feel Gen 2 is better and also no major issues with Gen 2 as there was with Gen1 like heater etc …. I think is a much needed improved versio . I would pay the extra for a Gen2 personally but if your doing short journeys the GEn1 is great I just find the range really helps and the car does charge quicker if it’s primed for sure.

Moved from J1 4S CT on 20" wheels in November 2024 to a J1.2 4S ST on 21" Gen 2 Mission E wheels. Like you average consumption on the J1.2 is 3.1m/kwh. Best range indicated on a full charge in recent hot weather was 340 miles, lowest on a cold winter day about 276 from memory. With the J1 range would be 170 to 245 miles winter to summer, but we had some extremely cold weather (for the UK) in December 2022 when I took delivery of it. I think it was -7 deg on the second day of ownership

I know EV owners are trained to be obsessed with range, but isn’t it the consumption number that matters more in most real world driving?

Consumption determines cost (similar to fuel economy on ICE cars).

Range only matters in those rare situations where you do a long road trip and it happens to be the right distance where it would require an extra charging stop vs a car with less range.

Example-
Any trip from 0-250 miles- neither car requires a stop

250-290- only J1.1 requires a short 5 min charge

290-500- both require a stop

500-580-only J1.1 requires a 2nd stop.

Not exact math, but you get the idea. Only in those small windows of distance will the extra range really matter.

Now if you have an unusually long commute that just happens to fit in that range- buy a car that can make it without charging. For everyone else? I think we obsess over maximum range too much.

I’m very happy with my’22 and plan to keep driving her for a loooong time. In the Netherlands a bigger range is pointless anyway!
I must admit i’m curious for the winter, got her in April of this year. But sure it will be fine, even if an occasional trip needs an extra charge underway

That's funny - I upgraded from a 2023 Taycan GTS to a new, J1.2 Taycan Turbo S (sedan form) back in May. Over 1,666 miles to date, my J1.2 is likewise averaging 3.1 mi/kWh.

That's an average, though, and it's distorted northward by my "spirited" drives. I'm easily getting over 300 miles of range on the highway while cruising from 65-75 mph.

Indeed, on the original 21" inch eco wheel and tire set, with Hankook iON Evos, I was getting just over 350 real-world miles, which was amazing. They didn't offer anywhere near enough performance, though, for the power the Turbo S generates. There was little feel through the steering wheel and turn-in did not feel sharp the way my old 2023 GTS did. A few weeks ago, I swapped out the wheels with the forged, low-weight Turbo GT set with Pirelli Rs to go with them. It made a night and day difference to the steering feel and handling, to say nothing of putting the power down. There's been a clear efficiency / range penalty, which was to be expected, but I still get a little over 300 miles of real-world range on the highway, which is plenty good enough for me.

The efficiency gap is real between J1.1 and J1.2. Whereas before I'd get mid-30s in kwh/100mi on certain drives, for example, I now get mid- to high-20s. That's with the new performance tires. Hell, yesterday morning, I felt chill and drove 8 miles to work with a light touch in nice weather with windows down, no AC, and a slight downhill commute. I got 5.5 mi/kWh - a world beyond anything I'd ever gotten with the J1.1. And this is in a Turbo S with the 600 amp inverter.

Others asked about key J1.2 upgrades beyond range. Here are the big ones:

Active ride: It's a game-changer. I'm incredulous as to how comfortable the car is to drive, whether on the highway or on poor roads heading into work in DC. I love how it leaps up to greet you - makes it materially easier getting in and out. But the biggest benefit is going over speed bumps. They were a major PITA in the J1.1. I had to use the lift function, which cancelled at an annoyingly slow 20 mph when driving between a series of bumps. In the J1.2, you barely slow down going over them and the bump is just cushioned and no scrape happens. I love it. Obviously, the body control with AR is next level, but my 2023 had PDCC and was excellent in staying flat in the corners.

Push to pass: EVs are typically not as exciting to drive as performance ICE cars because there isn't as much interaction or an experience. The shift from first to second has long been a Taycan trait, and helps to make driving more interesting. Hitting the button and getting the 10-second countdown with sound to match and theatrics on screen add a further element of engagement and excitement. Not that the Turbo S needs this, of course - the base power level in first gear is ridiculous. But push to pass is a great feature.

Charging: EV infrastructure has gotten noticeably better on the US NE corridor than when I got my 2023 Taycan. The key is to get away from Electrify America. Be that as it may, I've been amazed how much better the J1.2 is on this front. I get much higher peak charging speeds, and these are sustained noticeably longer. Long-distance driving just became noticeably easier.

We've only had our 2025 Taycan 4S with the Performance Battery Plus (97 usable) for about 1,600 miles, but the real-world range has been pretty remarkable so far.

1,000 highway miles: approximately 300 miles of range

600 miles of mixed driving (about 95% city): approximately 373 miles of range

That 373-mile figure lines up almost exactly with my latest charge - see attached predicting 322 miles of range available for 86% of the battery's state of charge (SOC):

100 ÷ 86 = 1.163
322 × 1.163 = 374 miles of projected range from 100% SOC

I realize we're enjoying favorable weather in Colorado right now, but the 600 miles of mixed driving included four mountain drives, and I'd estimate at least 20% of my driving has been moderately spirited. So this isn't the result of deliberately hypermiling the car.

I'm sure efficiency and range will drop during a Colorado winter; I'll have to see by how much.

Still, the efficiency I'm seeing from the Taycan 4S is pretty incredible. We also own a Mercedes EQE 500 SUV, which has averaged about 300 miles of real-world range over the past 1½ years.

For another comparison, in typical daily driving the Taycan 4S is consistently around 26 kWh/100 miles, while the EQE 500 SUV is around 28 kWh/100 miles.

For a car with the Taycan 4S's performance, seeing roughly 300 miles on the highway and potentially 370+ miles in favorable mixed driving conditions is impressive.

This post makes me feel better about my range with my 2025 GTS. I'm getting similar results... I do have a lead foot off every stop though so maybe a bit lower overall (also heavier wheels with the RS Spyders but I do have the same tires).

The J1.2 is a fabulous car. I hope you love the GTS. I do think Porsche sprinkles a little something special into the steering and suspension tuning of the GTS. My Turbo S is amazing, but it feels tuned with an eye to comfort relative to my old GTS, which felt really sporty. I wonder if the J1.2 GTS is similar. I suspect it is.

I don't have enough experience with any other Taycan (or Porsche) to really comment on how it's different. I do love it though.

It's a way more comfortable ride than either my old Tesla Model 3 or my Wife's Cadillac Escalade (or any other car we've owned). It's also a way more precise and predictable handling car than anything I've ever driven. I believe Active Ride is the reason.
