34,000 miles on my 2020 4S. It’s ridiculously good. I’ve had 1 issues with a pinched wiring harness (fixed by the dealer) and I have an issue with the passenger window that showed up last week. (Waiting for my appt.). Otherwise, not a single issues and 34,000 miles of FUN to date!!!!

My GTS has been amazing. I had a Mach-E before this, and while very practical it had recall issues too. Much less fun to drive and not as well built as the Taycan.

I dont see my self buying any EV but this car. I have not had any of the major issues experienced, so I would do it. Keep a second car on hand though since you do have logistical issues with service if needed.

Even though some old-timers are gone, there are still plenty of EXCELLENT contributors bending over backwards and paying it forward to help newbies like me.

For which I am profoundly grateful. Thank you!!

No second thoughts.

From what I can see, people either have issues from day 1 or not much. If you don’t face big issues in the first year or have them fixed, you should be good. Rarely if something happens - you can send it out. I would suggest if chatting with any Taycan owners there. It’s a popular car so in a year’s time, it should be better than what’s ever is the case now !

I’ve been to Kauai and there’s no where you can go that’s faster than 35MPH and that’s if there’s no traffic. Frankly, I think a Taycan, any Taycan, is wasted in Hawaii. And Kauai is probably the worst island to drive one on. I don’t really see the point. If it were me, I’d get a Tesla Model Y and put the balance in my kid’s college fund.

This forum like any forum is a bit of a micro climate and echo chamber. Those with no issues won't say that as much as those with issues. So you will get that view from here. My RWD arrives next month after a 14 month wait so I can't personally speak on reliability yet. My current daily is a Audi A6 Quattro Hybrid. Its had a few issues with the battery charger and the computer glitching. It loses my saved journeys every few weeks too. All cars sold in enough numbers have issues. Your more "unique" issue is your lack of easy access to a dealer. That's the point I'd way up anyway. Not the cars issues. Any new car will present a risk to you if that brand doesn't have a dealer on your island.

Have had my GTS for a few months (also traded a Macan GTS) - issues seem to be mostly software related and for the most part are only going to get resolved with updates (not through dealer). That being said, I would not buy a Porsche with your accessibility to service - doesn't seem worth it IMHO.

2020 Taycan Turbo

A little background...I did a test drive on a Taycan 4S and loved it. I have a 2020 Macan Turbo that I love as well but really want to a change and think doing the EV route is a good thing. Right now I am living in Peoria IL and at the dealership they told me they had a build for a GTS coming in beginning of July 2022. So I jumped on it and gave a deposit of course with stipulations they give me a fair price for my car, etc...I will be moving back home to Kauai Hawaii next year this time so getting service for a Porsche is not an easy thing, need to put the car on a barge to Honolulu and the dealership picks it up, Fixes it and sends back. Same for service. Having my current car is simple because a mechanic can do the oil changes, etc without the hassle.

After I put down the deposit I joined this forum and reading everything and getting freaked out...

Cracked glass roofs
Batteries going bad and 6 month wait to replace
Constant Error Codes in the PCM
Charging issues

I would guess the car should fair well in the warm tropical weather with the battery issue.

Be nice to get some positive reinforcement that I am making the right decision in upgrading to an EV..

And thank you all for you honesty and telling it all on this forum...very refreshing
I have a 2020 Taycan Turbo with 19,000 miles and haven't had a single problem and am enjoying this car more then any I've ever driven or owned. Sure there have been issues but statistically inconsequential, unless its you...

I've spent some time living, working and doing a lot of driving on two islands of similar size to Hawaii (Madeira, Sao Miguel) these past 8 months.

Topography is also similar, thus roads would be similar.

I cannot think of anything worse than a car of the size and "practicality" of a Taycan on either of those islands.

In fact, I saw a Taycan driving around Ponta Delgada in Sao Miguel the other day and almost shuddered at the inevitable curb rash, scraped front bumper and backing out of roads too small to pass that would happen. It would not be enjoyable. Anxiety driving would be too high.

There is also only about one stretch of road for 3-4km where you could drive in a "spirited" fashion, the remainder of the island you are usually stuck behind slow moving cars or trucks.

I do think EVs where average range is around 200m are ideal for small islands.

But not something of the size, cost and complexity to fix as a Taycan.

I'd get an ID3 or e208 instead. Or better still a hybrid, like the go-cart I'm currently driving: a Toyota Yaris.

Save the money on something else, or if you are based between a big US city/Hawaii, then the big US city is where your Taycan lives assuming you have property there.

You are right to hesitate. If you want to suck the fun out of driving something, drive with anxiety for all the road hazards your oversized vehicle will present you, including if it breaks down...

On a small island, with small roads, potentially badly maintained roads, and slow moving traffic in the city, get a hybrid or EV hot hatch and actually have fun, while also not caring if you ding it or it needs to be fixed, because it's designed to be low cost.

I misread your post for a minute and thought the car had to be shippend back to CONUS! ? I was like oh heck no! I’ve got almost 25k miles and minor issues here and there. Mostly smiles and good vibes. I’ve had to go in the dealer a few times for software issues and the main at 20k miles, but the vast majority of the time, the car has been phenomenal. It would still suck to ship it off like that to the dealer in Honolulu occasionally, but you’d be enjoying your car the rest of the time. Go get it and enjoy!

I lived on Kauai for 15 years so think I know it a little better then someone that went there as a tourist. There are plenty of fun roads to drive on...Olehena is a blast, Kapaa bypass, Highway from Anahola all the way to Kilauea...plenty of curves and straight aways. Only time there is real traffic is summer and December the heavy tourist times.

Both of my children are in College now, eldest graduating this year with a dual Physics/Computer Science degree from Williams College. The other is a rising Junior as a Chem major so pretty set in the college finance department.

I would never ever buy a Tesla...last car I would ever want. I personally think it is one of the ugliest cars ever made right up there with a Ford Pinto.
