Anyone here have any MHEV/PHEV hybrid range experience?
Currently on a road trip in the US, in a Grand Cherokee Plug in. Most of the hire SUVs here seem to be PHEVs. Although it had zero charge when picked up, in the first 150 miles, the Dashboard alleges that 43 of the first 150 miles were on Hybrid, from Braking and Coasting Regen. Those miles were at slow non interstate speeds, in the Yellowstone & Tetons parks, and without the savage max regeneration turned on.
That proportion of electric miles seems unbelievable. Anyone have any Panamera or Cayenne hybrid range experience?
I own a 2021 Cayenne TurboS eHybrid - it does pretty well with total miles in 40k being about 19k EV miles, and the rest w/ICE motor runinng - daily tasks are handled normally with all EV miles, and the car is masterful at haversting energy from normal activities such that it can shut down the ICE motor…at slow speeds and stop/go the ICE motor is not running a lot of the time…

here is actual data from the entire ownership period for a 600 HP V8 SUV that can do 0-60 in 3.2 seconds…I'd suggest 32 mpg average consumption for that type of high performance thirsty V8 engine is better than expected

for daily errands they are pretty good - my "record" is 1600 miles between fill ups - since you can charge it at home - if all you're doing is daily errands I can sometimes go weeks with out the ICE motor starting or only running briefly - this deeply extends the longevity of a single tank of gas - I routinely go at least 6-7 weeks between gas station visits - which means less than 12 visits a year to "fill up" with charging at home.

and here is the current tank of gas … we're no where near empty so I would estimate "july" sometime I'll be filling it up @ costco during a grocery run…

I had the cooking MY20 Cayenne e-Hybrid, my gateway to full EV when I discovered that I preferred pootling serenely around town in pure electric mode, and realised that most of the time I was lugging around a redundant ICE. The full monte did offer impressively sprightly performance but I rarely called on it.

I find hybrid's funny - most people get a hybrid because of range anxiety - and then during their ownership period spend most of their time "gaming" the hybrid system to avoid using the ICE motor - and/or always want just 5 more miles range so they could've "made the trip on pure EV" - which is just ROFL…because ultimately what they want is a full EV that has a big enough battery that they don't need an ICE motor to accomplish 99% of their driving needs.

I want/wanted a full EV but in 2021 when I was buying one - there was nothing Cayenne "class" that was full eV - so we hedged and got the Cayenne - but it was not my 1st choice - full EV was my first choice. We were transitioning from a Model X (which we liked) but wanted "out" of Tesla - wife/I both bought the Cayenne with the explicit purpose of driving it until 5+ years and then we figured we'd pop our heads up and see if we could find a pure-EV that fit our needs - and so far it looks like that bet is paying off…we'll see in 2026/2027 what our choices are…

but we love the Cayenne and it has exceeded my expectations for it's level of EV efficiency…

I’ve had 4 plug-ins, the last was a Range Rover Velar. I sold it with 12k on and the consumption was 85 mpg from delivery. It had only a 2.0L engine but was slightly faster than the V6 ICE. I went full EV with a Lexus RZ - very much the wrong move !

That's exactly what I did with my Panamera Turbo-S eHybrid ?.

Great car but not cheap - my wife wanted a PHEV and we went with a Volvo xc60 - been very happy with it - 42 miles on EV only…

Sure, but why buy a car with 600HP and drive it like a Prius? Yes, a luxury Prius. I know I should drive one before weighing my options. It does not make much sense to me.

I completely agree. I went from a previous generation (970) Panamera Turbo (chipped to 600bhp) and I didn't want to give up the V8 so went for the 971 Panamera Turbo-S eHybrid to get the power - but found myself pootling around on electric only most of the time and getting annoyed if I accidentally kicked the ICE into life. It was still nice to know the V8 was there for when I wanted all the beans.

I'm in a Taycan GTS now so no fear of waking the V8 ??. Oh, and no regrets - my time in the hybrid showed me I didn't really need the V8 up front, though I still miss the burble/growl when pushing on.

When I sold my 22 BMW X5 45e, my lifetime mpg was 55 over 30k miles. The car only had 24-31 miles on electric only, but was perfect for my daily, and I refueled once a month. On road trips, it still averaged 28 - 30 MPGs.

It was much harder finding a L2 charger at destinations, but charging at home was a luxury to have.

Owning the car gave me confidence that a BEV was the right fit for my driving lifestyle
