Holy cats that’s a lot of info! Looks like plenty of new potential widgets :) Is it safe to leave the OBDII connector plugged in at all times?
Generally yes - although I usually don’t myself - you will always get an ‘electrical load’ warning on inserting the OBDII reader - the Porsche tech at any PIWIS station will see the very same warnings but they are simply designed to remind the tech that it is actually plugged in - zero issues with the cars systems :). You can dismiss these warnings from the wheel controls and leave it in - actually required when measuring certain metrics whilst test driving the car.

So OBDII has officially nerd-sniped me haha. I'm now about 200 pages deep into ISO specifications and nearly have a basic OBDII library that can read VINs from a BTLE OBDII reader connected to the car :D Feeling pretty promising that I can make something really great for Electric Sidecar with this.

Had a feeling you’d get hyped by the potential - huge amount of data in there and actually lots of potential to design/construct better data descriptors for a multitude of attributes - this is perhaps the one area where the really great CarScanner app could improve on but entirely understand the scale of the task that developer has in respect the enormous number of vehicle brands it covers - not trivial!

I fell down a deep rabbit hole last night learning about mode 22; have you found any good sources of PID information for the Taycan? I can't seem to find any official bulletins from Porsche and the paid ISO specifications are hit or miss between being electrical diagrams and actual protocol payload definitions.

in my opinion the OBD-2 PID specifications got not updated yet in order to EV needs. so you will have to fight against old data which comes with ISO based or better called obd2 specification pids for engines which burns gas or diesel.

the data you are searching are not locating in ECU 01 = OBD-2 PIDs refers to, you search for data points (=measurement values = uds | ==PIDs) from ECU 19 (Gateway), ECU 8C (Battery energy control module), ECU C5 (Thermal Management), ECU C6 (Battery Charger Control Modul) and so on.

If you want some logs from Taycan Models with ODIS, just PM me, i have several here.

OBD-2 PID Specification
In OBD-2, PIDs (Parameter Identifiers) are the indicators for the information supported by the engine control unit. Depending on which PIDs an ECU supports, the corresponding measured values from sensors etc. can be queried. All engine control units support at least some of the first 32 PIDs. If PID 32 is set, this means that further PIDs from 33-64 are supported. The next 32 PIDs are determined by querying the value of PID 32. The last PID in this series (64) then indicates whether a further 32 PIDs are available and so on.

Excellent data - thx for sharing - I have not looked in depth as yet but seem to recall also a lot of support data either directly via the CarScanner app or through their web site too.

I'm mainly looking for charts like these to help with understanding the data that can be received from the vehicle:

Porsche Taycan Interested in an unofficial Apple Watch app? Screenshot 2024-01-14 at 11.28.02 AM

Charts like these are scattered around the internet and surprisingly difficult to find, even within the paid ISO documents that have poor signal vs noise (/me glances over at ISO 15765-2).

Hear that - was mostly thinking you might ping the CarScanner developer (albeit a potentially competitor situation :)) as suspect likely he has done a ton of legwork by now.

Easily being able to show (and track SoH) would be great, plus getting a view of cell voltages would be amazing. I’ve got CarScanner Pro and can’t for the life of me work out how to get that chart of cell voltages! I can only see them in the big long list under ‘All sensors’.

here you go: ECU 8C

Porsche Taycan Interested in an unofficial Apple Watch app? 1705282570629

you want more? specify it and i will search for you. what you need additional is so called calcution formula. i can export all in one shot. lot of data is completly different in just formula output so thats main work - search needed data field and have also the right calc formula for.

ECU C6 Battery Charger

in current models the most data is stored in ECU 19 = gateway. here you go, the so called 'holy grail' = SoH

as wrote: PID vs DATA completely different (in DATA fields you will have much more specific as it is customized by the manufacturers. as described PID = standard which all OBD2 cars should fit from 199x, latest 2006... but some will not ;) ) but doesnt take in account in order to thats no data for EVs in Standard PIDs.

First milestone passed: a big chunk of the standard OBD codes handled by the Juke can now be decoded. Now to take a stab at the Taycan data to see where there's overlap and then I need to organize this spaghetti of parsing logic into something coherent enough to turn into a front-end UI that's easy to understand.

Ah I suspect this will definitely come in handy! I'll post back here once I've exhausted what I can poll from the car directly.
