U.S. based owners, how much did you pay to install your 240v/50 amp socket? I have a detached garage that requires running a 80ft line through an existing conduit tube from my new 200amp panel in my house. I’m being quoted close to $3500 and that seems very high. Installer says he’ll put in a 70amp line and needs to put in a separate panel in the garage to meet code.

copper is VERY expensive these days - I'd get 2 other bids - but given distance it could be expensive…

Assuming that it's an overbuilt line, i.e. 3 lines of 3AWG @ 100ft @ $2 a foot (it costs less than this), 100 dollars for a top of the line panel (also doesn't really cost this much), 10 dollars for random fittings (you've an existing conduit and they'll need to have it "branch", assuming top of the line afci 80amp breaker to go with the fancy panel, materials would be ~750 (this would be robbery). You can ask if the labor is indeed valued at 2750. You should definitely be getting other quotes... Also don't mention anything about running it for an EV (they also know that you're going to try to get back a tax break here). You're doing this to run a welder. :)

Just did 100 ft in daughters house in GA. $1k. Detached garage with conduit tube as well. Used existing panel so this was just line from panel to outlet.

$195. Paid a handyman to do it.
Did the permit myself with the city which saved a few hundred.

I wish I could file the permit myself. In my county, only a electrician is allowed to file for the permit. But I just recently found out a homeowner can go take an exam and be able to do stuff on your own house (within limits).

That's too bad you can't. I was surprised how easy it was. But then again if you do enough digging on the internet and use samples the load calculation is super straightforward. They also wanted a line diagram of the installation, and the cut sheet for the EVSE I had purchased. Super easy.
The quote I got from an electrician was $900 I think.

$1800 for 125A feed (around 10’ straight up from basement to garage) to new 125A panel, install hard wired EVSE on a 100A circuit, and install a 14-30R. The hardwired EVSE and 14-30R were immediately adjacent to the panel. They also has to change some breakers in the main panel to make room for the subpanel breaker.

$3500 sounds high. I would get more quotes.

If your capacity allows for it, you may want to consider running a larger feed
of 100A or 125A to the garage right away to allow for more options and easier changes in the future.
