I am a big electric car fan (owned one since 2021; now have a Taycan and a KIA EV6). BUT, I am seriously considering getting an ICE car.

Why?

My Taycan has been a blast – but it is a finicky lover. I can live with all the various software updates and busted heaters since, for the most part, they have been “non-urgent” and allowed scheduled service. It has been typical that service needs to be scheduled a month off – but they are, again, non-urgent.

Now, however, I have had the misfortune to run into the dreaded ”Electrical System Error | Park….”. So far the car has been sitting in the dealer’s parking lot for a week and a half and my Rep won’t even venture a guess when it might even be looked at.

Altho a big dealer (Porsche Gold Coast; Long Island), they say they have limited techs for EVs. That issue seems to be widespread in ALL dealers and it is giving me pause.

We (EV drivers) seem to be moving towards “adequate” high speed charging (not great but much better ..) and pricing is coming down and the world is moving to EVs …BUT…

The inability to get even close to ICE levels of service availability (in the US) is a significant downside and seems to be resistant to change.

Am I being too downhearted? Too pessimistic? I need a boost!

This is the sad report but rooted in reality with well known issues related to the Heater and Battery cells and if you do not have a responsive service center then you are out of luck. Your particular situation sounds like a no way out unless you can find another service center to take care of you. Also, we were just nuked with a downgrade on the AC charging from 11kW to 9.6kW so that does not help matters long term and my testing of Tesla chargers was a complete downer with only 1 of 3 I tried worked with no confidence of using them as a backup for out of town trips.

I have been fortunate with zero issues and having a service center that gives me VIP priority next day service if I want to while other Taycans waiting for service piled up on their lot due to recalls.

Keep us posted if you find another service center that can take care of you.

How often do you charge away from your own garage?

I’ve been driving electric since 2012, first teslas, but I’ve been in a Taycan GTS for the past 3+ years and also have a VW ID.4. The Porsche is the only one that’s given me trouble, between two failed heaters, and a battery failure which took it out of commission for a month. Still my favorite car, but I plan to upgrade to a gen 2 before my warranty is up for peace of mind.

If your local service center sucks, that does make things worse. I’d definitely have a backup car (which it sounds like you do), but ICE or EV isn’t the question imo: it’s whether the backup is reliable. In my experience, EVs are generally pretty easy to live with and require essentially zero maintenance besides tires, the gen 1 Taycan is uniquely volatile. I also know someone who had a Rivian that was a total lemon with multiple battery failures within months, so maybe steer clear of first gen anything. :)

So, which 911 variant are you going to buy?

I've thought about Gen2 but service difficulties would still exist...not likely but .....

What is the year of your Taycan? I think 2023/2024 models have higher perceived reliability to me. Moving to J1.2 version, I agree, is not going to solve your break down or regular maintenance satisfaction if the service center of your choice is terrible.

Having gone full EV for a few years, and charging our cars every night in our garage, I can't imagine going back to ICE cars and needing to visit gas stations again.

I suggest considering another EV if you feel Taycan's are too unreliable - bear in mind J1.1s are 1st gen products - maybe try J1.2 or the Macan/ Cayenne EVs, or anther EV brand.

I love EVs also...and can live with things breaking.

The core issue tho is that service availability (waiting weeks and weeks for EV service) is unacceptable.

Buy a lightly-used Tesla Model S LR or Plaid - problem solved.

The poor EV reliability and poor service thing is not an industry issue rather more a Porsche issue. I had a Chevy EV and my wife a Cadillac EV and both never needed a repair or even a service. Software always worked.

I had a Rivian that needed one service and that was done by mobile service in my driveway the next day. I wanted more software features in the Rivian but what was there always worked well. After I sold it they added the phone integration features two months later!

I have a Cayenne Electric due in August and yesterday I discovered it still won't have fully integrated hands free phone messaging.

Until I bought a '24 Boxster I hadn't been to a dealer service department, gas station or messed with an oil change since 2018.

Service is a dealer issue, less Porsche or manufacturer. My Audi e-tron GT (J1.1 Taycan Turbo) would be booked next day, with loaner, work order completed in 24/48 hours.

Depending on how many Taycans are in for Service, my dealer is around 3 to 4 days turn around. Some dealers much longer.

With my Jaguar I-Pace it was 2 week wait at one dealer, but 24 hours at another dealer.
