Oh, deer! Taycan GT3.

A small deer jumped into freeway in a road section which actually is fenced to keep to wildlife out of the road. At 120 km/h I didn't have enough time to brake and evade the deer but hit him. Poor creature had to suffer some 10 mins or so before local police patrol came and put him out of his misery.

Taycan got a GT3 treatment when Pedestrian Protection System shot the hood up. No dents or even scratches in paint or any damage for any frontal sensors but after PPS deployment hood hinge system with charges must be replaced. Given the number of wild life accidents here local Porsche shop has hinges on the shelf but they have to be painted into body colour before installation so it will take Porsche out of commission for couple of days and will cost 200€ insurance deductible.

That is indeed a safety system that triggers hood hinges as shown in the picture.

It's interesting that they colour code the hinges.

They're hidden unless the frunk panel is open. And it strikes me as adding cost and time to any repairs. They should just have them in black and be done with it.

I assume German Engineers didn't plan the system for environment where every other car might pop the Taycan GT3 hood modification during its life span. Design for serviceability guide should say: multi use, spring actuated hinges which end user could wind down by himself.

And I am waiting to see the invoice. "Painting hidden hinges - 2h work - 400€" or something in that vein.

I was curious about the dynamics of how this system works and found this video from 2019 that along with other interesting crash tests shows very briefly a human shaped object being hit and how it influences that object.

$400 euros for 2 hrs of work seems like a bargain

In our neck of woods, the reputable independent shops invoice 80€-120€/h and Toyota/Hyundai/etc. dealerships around 150€/h. To my knowledge only Porsche and Ferrari dealerships get into 200€+/h ($232 with today's exchange rate) territory.

And of course, Porsche has "special rate" for any high voltage job. That is in 250€+/h ballpark.
