Sincere there is no thread on the forum touching on OTA updates or software that @daveo4EV does not bring up Tesla, I am going to go a different direction since they may know how to write software, but they make $hit cars.

This is how you prepare your vehicle for meaningful OTA software updates:

And, yes, I have been enjoying my Rivian in Southwest this summer.
Sorry to derail the thread, but I couldn't resist when I saw your post. Also enjoying my Rivian!

I dig the wrap. And, nice motorbike in the back. I rode BMW GS adventure bikes for a long time, but people are too distracted for me to enjoy long distance trips on a motorbike anymore.

I have to admit that I am happy that I ditched the F-150 Lightning for the Rivian since I can fit both of my cars in the garage now.

I love my CT4s and it is a treat to drive in the mountains, while the Rivian is a great road tripping vehicle - range, comfy, and roomy.

And, yes, the OTA process on the Rivian is a lot more straightforward than the Porsche.

Ha, I can't tell for certain if your Taycan is white or Chalk, but my GTS is Chalk...looks like we have very similar auto preferences! Although I do still have a red Model X Plaid.

How is DC charging with your Rivian? As flawless as your Taycan with EA?
So far so good, knock on wood.

Over the 4th of July week I did a road trip to Telluride and Flagstaff to break in the Rivian. I used three Rivian DC chargers, which were flawless. I rolled into Telluride with 65%, so I just plugged the truck into the wall charger for the 4 days I was there. I then drove from Telluride to Flagstaff and used the State of Utah DC charger in Bluff, UT with no issues.

On the way back from Flagstaff I used three different Electrify America chargers on I-40 and I-25 and had no issues. I just had to initiate charging via the app.

Obviously, charging speeds are not the same, so you just have to be prepared to spend an extra 15 or 20 minutes at each charger as compared to the Taycan.

Equal level "flawless" I'd say...meaning excruciating at times. 9000 miles on my Rivian since February and lots of DC charging. It's a pain in the butt compared to Tesla, but so is the Taycan. (Just handling a CCS plug vs NACS is ridiculous enough). One advantage the Taycan has is a smaller battery and more efficiency means less charge time. I drove the Rivian from L.A. to Austin in April and got very, very used to sitting in the truck at EA stations.

But "flawless" is not a word I'd ever associate with anything CCS related.

My CT is Ice Grey.

I had a Model X from 2016 to 2019. Was a great car to road trip in even though it rattled a bunch and drove sloppily.

What kind of locations host Rivian DC sites? Gas stations, retail places, etc?
Can Taycans charge with Rivian chargers?

I used the Rivian DC chargers in Salida, CO, Grand Junction, CO and Holbrook, AZ. The Salida charger is next to a Safeway store, the Grand Junction charger is by the mall, and the Holbrook charger is behind the Taco Bell. Since 75% of the Rivian staff is made up of former Tesla employees, the philosophy on where to place chargers will mirror what Tesla has done over the years.

The Rivian DC chargers are for Rivian's only, but some of the locations have AC chargers as well and those are open for any vehicle.

So the Rivians are cool, but...

On Topic of OTAs -- Perhaps I'm the only one who is excited about a major OTA update? Let me explain why.

Every company that has an OS in their product has at times struggled to get good at OTA updates. I remember when an iOS update could brick your iPhone 4s, and when it was mandatory that you backup your laptop prior to installing an update in case it failed. Even companies we think are good at OTA updates (e.g., Tesla) have had their moments.

So I'm looking at the email from Porsche as a positive thing. It tells me they think they are turning the corner and can do a major OTA update to the PCM without asking all of us to schedule dealer time (usually weeks in the future), and then take our car in and lose it for 1-2 days.

Am I a little nervous about it? Yeah, of course - I'm not an idiot. Things could go wrong in so many ways. As I understand it, I get to pick the install time, and so I plan to be in a safe place (my garage), and then let the update happen by following the instructions in the video (car off, pre-conditioning off, windows up, initiate update, get out, lock door, hope and pray it works ;)). Ideally I'd get a message on the My Porsche app that it had finished successfully, but I don't expect that.

If the update doesn't install, then I'll take the car into the dealer, but I'm hoping this message from Porsche indicates they think they are ready for major OTA updates, and that it will go smoothly.

Let's see how it works, and whether Porsche can be successful. I'm hoping they are.

@daveo4EV - I think you have a 2020 Turbo. Did you get the email?
It's a 2020 4S. No email yet, no notice in Porsche Connect, and PCM indicates all software up to date. Perhaps the early adopters are left out, or the update snuck in overnight!
