86% at 20k miles is not baseline, that's worst case scenario.
I've seen many cars with 50k+ on the clock and over 90% SoH.
Agree. Which paints the picture that mileage has less impact on battery degradation than things like heat and high state of charge for long periods. Take my car for example, 85 SOH with 22k miles. The issue, it’s always been in a hot climate, and the previous owner could have abused the battery by leaving it at high SOC. other factors could also apply, but I’m convinced mileage should be the least of worries.

Do you need an OBD reader to see if you have bad cells then? Or is it on the PCM?
You must have OBD reader to generate Cell health graphs (SoC, Temp, Voltage). Surprising that Taycan even the latest does not provide SoH. Macan EV now has added that with 2026 model year. I understand Tesla has had it a long time.

IF these numbers are true, wonder why net/gross is much higher on J1.1 PB vs J1.1 PB+
79/82.3 = 96%
83.7/93.4 = 89.6%
Anyone know why?

Depends on the Taycan and Taycan generation- J1.1 (2020 - 2024) or J1.2 (2025 model year to current)

J1.1 Performance Battery

Gross 82.3 kWh
Net (useable) 79 kWh

J!1.1 Performance Battery Plus

Gross 93.4 kWh
Net (useable) 83.7 kWh

J!1.2 Performance Battery

Gross 89 kWh

Net (useable) 82.3 kWh

J!1.2 Performance Battery Plus

Gross 105 kWh
Net (useable) 97 kWh

There's no "if".

Also answered above - only an informed guess on "why".

Porsche had the highest margin of protected battery space compared to other brands so part of this can be exploited by this buffer being reduced. to boost range.

It has to do with the law in US where battery warranty is 8 years or 100,000 miles (California) and retain at least 70%. BMW has been doing that on their hybrid where US range/available capacity is lower than in EU. That way the consumer won’t see any range reduction or min in that time frame

You have the wrong number for J1.1 PB usable. It’s closer to 71, not 79. So the net/gross ratio is similar.

It's also why range doesn't drop much with SoH reduction, there's a lot of buffer.
This would imply the upper and/or lower cutoff voltages are changing dynamically over life by the BMS. Do you have evidence this is happening?

I’ve heard speculation but never seen any proof.

Huh? It appears that the numbers are actually incorrect. SMH. "IF" was indeed the right wording.

"Previously, the Taycan’s standard battery pack had 71 kWh usable capacity (79.2 kWh total) and the Performance Battery Plus offered 83.7 kWh usable (93.4 kWh total)"
https://insideevs.com/news/716351/porsche-taycan-efficiency-range/

Also here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_Taycan
There are several such reports, and though there's no official Porsche report, the numbers appear to be derived from a Porsche presentation.

So the PB numbers were 71 / 79 and not Net 79 kWh / Gross 82.3 kWh.

So Net/Gross
PB: 71/79.2 = 89.6%
PB+: 83.7/93.4 = 89.6%
Same buffer.

You're right. I took the incorrect numbers from a previous post by another poster.

It's a worldwide warranty and is the same for all countries. 8 years / 100K.
