A big reason why I picked my current insurer (CHUBB) is because they cover (and encourage) you to get OEM glass replaced at dealer. I don't have a HUD, but those that do need OEM glass even more.
I had the choice with my insurer, I just didn't know it mattered or what problems I was about to encounter. This is the reason for my PSA.

Do so at your own peril. Some after market market windows may be better than others. In my case, an after market window was installed with a cost was $900. The calibration by a Porsche dealer was $1,537. The safety systems faulted. I went back to Porsche to check the calibration and they performed it again only for it to fail again. The tech told me that the camera was shifting.
When the faulty aftermarket was replaced with the OEM windshield, the cameras did not have to be recalibrated. Everything worked fine.
FWIW, the company which worked on my chip said they have all the equipment and knowledge to do calibration in house. It may have been empty bragging, but honestly I struggle to imagine Porsche is the only company with driving assistance systems relying on cameras.

I do appreciate your PSA, and your experience did get me worried. If/when, I research my options a lot more carefully thanks to your announcement.

Aftermarket was never an option for me as my car shipped with the thermal/acoustic glass.

That said though, I might not have gotten it on the replacement, which suits me fine!
Suddenly the GPS works on the Porsche dashcam...

The tech told me that the camera was shifting.
That is odd, as it would imply that either the camera was not properly attached to the windshield, or the windshield was not properly attached to the car. Technically, it could also be that the windshield itself was super flexible and flopping in the wind, but I think that's less likely. What else could cause the camera to shift?

When the faulty aftermarket was replaced with the OEM windshield, the cameras did not have to be recalibrated.
I find this somewhat surprising, especially that the calibration was likely screwed up by the calibration attempts with non-OEM glass.

It sounds like you no longer have Porsche OEM thermally and noise insulated windshield. Given your preference for quiet ride (from your tire posts) I would think you'd notice. Perhaps you got some 3rd party glass that is well noise insulated?

Just had my kid's Corolla repaired, which included windshield replacement. Body show sent the car to Toyota for calibration. Unless the company you worked with is a Porsche certified shop, I doubt they have the software tools or procedures to do a proper calibration. I hope they don't just stick it on and claim it's calibrated.

Was that your portion of the payment? I somehow don't see the cost being that low to even get it delivered, much less installed, even if it's just a generic piece of glass of the correct size.
Yes, it will be an excess on the insurance. Over here you tend to get a much lower excess for glass replacement (vs accident damage or whatever) if you use the insurers authorised repairer.

Oh it's OEM for sure - it had a Porsche part number on the invoice. It just doesn't seem to block GPS any more on the cam, so I think I got the "plain" Porsche OEM glass.

It is also possible that the GPS signal is more easily reached in California than Dallas.

I long for the simple days. I remember damaging a windshield and it was replaced in an hour - No muss, no fuss.

I’ve had a chip filled at a local business. The guy told me VAG uses low quality glass - and i tend to agree.
Hmm might be the case indeed.
With VAG cars I remember that I had to repair my windscreen several times. With BMW nothing in 4 years and with my Polestar the first repair was after 120K km.

And last week I had the first chip in the Taycans windscreen. After just 8K km. Or just bad luck.

Every Porsche I've ever had ends up with a badly pitted windshield. Their glass most definitely sucks.

Remember even simpler days? The horse hair prevented most stone chip damage to its skin, and even if it got through, it healed fairly quickly. It had better ADAS functions too, would self drive on routes which the horse did daily, and it had built in self-preservation collision avoidance. Charging stations aplenty too, anywhere there was a grass field and a river or a lake. ?

Yea, body shops make mistakes. I once had a windshield replaced on my wife's car, turned out that they replaced it with OEM glass but without heated wipers (area under wipers with a heater like the rear window), so they had to replace it again.

I just happened to me, heading to Porsche for replacement on Wednesday. I’m with USAA and they use Safelight to handle claim. Told them wanted OEM and that is was noise insulated. Of course they said they would only pay for fair and reasonable costs. Think that means I’m screwed but we will see. Dealer said it was expensive around 5k.
