The referenced s/ware update was completed on MY 21 4S last week. Charged it twice since with last night the most recent. In the morning, the indicator light around on the charging port was red, and the PMC was off. I pulled the plug out and this is what the outlet looked like:

The electrician came out right away and the inside was fried. Sent the electrician the email identifying what the recent update addressed. He has to investigate further to ascertain the cause. The wiring at the closest junction box to this outlet appeared fine as did the panel.

Question - has anyone experienced any issues with charging since this most recent s/ware update?

Thanks.

I am surprised that you have a junction box between the panel and the outlet.

I am not an expert, I may be using the misusing the terminology. It is simply a metal box where the wiring passes through - that's all. The wiring passes through metal conduit to and through another metal box where it then goes from inside the garage to outside then to the panel box which is on the other side of the house.

I have seen this at a friend's house. It was on a 120V socket that he used to temporally charge his car. The electrician said it was arcing due to not having a tight connection between the socket and blade. He replaced the socket with one that had a tight fit and no problem.

Good luck

You're wondering if a software update to the car caused your EVSE wiring to fry?

There should be nothing the car can do to cause anything to happen with the EVSE and wiring. Which EVSE? The whole point of the EVSE in the first place is to protect your house (and you) from the car...

That looks like a regular residential NEMA 14-50. They are ~$7 and much inferior to the industrial-quality NEMA 14-50 outlets. They occasionally fail under load in a way similar to your photo. I strongly suggest replacing yours with something like these below. They are normally ~$75, but seem to have recently spiked to the $150 range on Amazon. It's worth reading the reviews of the industrial outlets on Amazon - many people are replacing fried cheap units:

 Receptacle Recommendation: High quality, industrial grade receptacle Examples: Hubbell part # HBL9450A, Cooper part #5754N.

Note both Hubbell and Cooper make much cheaper residential quality outlets as well, so be careful of the part numbers!

There is a dramatic difference in build quality, especially with respect to the contact surface area between the wire and the outlet, providing much lower electrical/thermal resistance under load (in theory at least). They are also easy to properly torque given the hex nut heads. I switched mine out to the industrial Hubbell a year ago over these concerns and have been very happy with the beefed up (and very cool) outlet. If you do switch to an industrial outlet, you'll likely find it is deeper and has a slightly larger diameter, so you may need to change out the mounting plate as well.

Here's another good thread on the subject: https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/master-thread-definitive-14-50-nema-outlet-guide.140694/

And, a good video review of different outlets:
