Refusing to Hardwire a Dascham

I'm based in the GTA in Ontario, and around ten different installers straight up refused to hardwire a dashcam stating that it would be either bad for the 12 V battery, blow a fuse, or is somehow bad for the car. I find it hard to believe that when so many people already have hardwired dashcams and don't seem to have major issues. Any recommendations on where to get a dashcam hardwired in the GTA?

Maybe they don't want any liability associated with it. Can't you ask them to route the wires into the passenger footwell area and you'll be the one plugging the cables in? Frees them from the liability and you spare yourself a few hours trying to route the cables.

Get Porsche to do it and install the OEM dashcam.

Not only will they do it, the work will be warranty safe.

I've heard of some issues with the OEM dashcam, so that's why I'm opting for an aftermarket one. Warranty-wise, shouldn't be that big of an issue? I've asked the dealership and they basically said it won't affect it.

My only issue with the OEM dashcam is the stupid treated windshield blocks the GPS and radar.

That is not unique to the OEM dashcam. My Blackvue is also not getting GPS signal where I installed it.

Personally I'm going with a viofo a139 pro dual.

The windshield might be an issue depending how you mount it. I don't have the car yet to make a proper assessment but would like to use the dotted area so GPS works properly. On the other hand, I'd also like to have a more or less centered view so that's going to be a challenge.

In any case, anything seems to be better than the porsche oem one.

I did mine myself. Pretty basic and took a few hours. Wire in the passenger footwell to the fuse box.

I get the idea of a dash cam to record someone hitting your car when it's parked etc, but i think most camera's don't do this unless you install an extra battery etc. Otherwise, isn't it a bit of a double edged sword?

This was discussed in another thread. The dashcam hooks to permanent 12V and ACC 12V so that it stays under power when the car is parked. Depending on the dashcam, the consumption will vary but most top of the line dashcams will draw around 500mAh in parking mode. This means that it will slowly but surely drain the 12V battery (which is 40Ah if I'm not mistaken). However, since the last big SW Update, the car is instructed to automatically start to recharge the 12V whenever it's low for max 30 minutes and repeats the process up to 8x until giving up.

I did the math in the other thread and it would come out at around 7 days parked with 24/7 surveillance until you get into trouble. After that, you better have a booster in your glove box to unlock the frunk and wake up the car.

Obviously the 7 days are speculation because we don't know exactly at what rate the 12V battery gets charged (so we don't exactly know how much amps are put back into it) and I think I was assuming that the 12V would be at 100% at the parking time (which might not happen).

Many (including the awful Audi/Porsche Dashcam) include a parking mode. Most will monitor the voltage and switch themselves off it drops too far to protect the battery from being run flat. Most new Blackvue models have selectable settings for voltage and for time in their app settings. I've got mine set to switch off if the battery drops to 12.5v or after 12h of parking mode time.

So far not had any issues.
