More encouraging progress on the road noise front. After completing the same procedure on the front passenger side wheel well as I performed last week on the driver's side, I have achieved a significant reduction in tire noise. :rock:

For sure my dB meter is a crude $50 device from Amazon, but it indicates a relative 2.5 -- 3.0 dB reduction after application of CLD and 3M Thinsulate to my front wheel wells. Even without the dB meter, the difference is noticeable -- most interesting to me is that I now clearly hear the little low frequency thuds when running over expansion joints whereas before they were masked by the tire noise.

Also encouraging is that after correcting some of my rookie mistakes, installation of the sound deadeners and sound absorbers went much quicker and much more smoothly.

Above is a pic showing how I left a large void, this time, in the areas surrounding holes in which bolts/fasteners would need to protrude during re-installation. Last time around I just poked a little hole through the Thinsulate with an X-acto knife -- which did not make life much easier for me during re-assembly.

Above is a pic of the liner cover construction in progress. Last time around I applied the Thinsulate like a blanket around the liner and cut-out wedges in order to get the Thinsulate to lay flush against the liner without any wrinkles. This time, I constructed my sound absorbing layer from several smaller pieces and taped them together with my trusty Gorilla tape. This proved to be much easier than the former process. And I suspect that having several small pieces of sound absorber vs. one large piece makes no difference in terms of efficacy.

Total time spent on this morning's install was about 2.5-3.0 hours in total (including coffee breaks, washing the liner, cleaning all the gunk under the liner, etc.). The most time consuming part was fabricating the liner cover from the Thinsulate.

Next steps: Tackle the rear wheels on my own, then bring in the Porsche tech freelancer to help get the doors apart/put back together. I'll be vacationing for the next couple weeks, then toward the end of June I'll get back to work and report on my progress.

Update on road noise project. Yesterday afternoon, I finished installing sound deadener and sound absorbers on all four wheels. I have not yet had the chance to take a long drive with my trusty Amazon dB meter to quantify the results, but subjectively the noise level is much improved. I'll take a few dB readings at different speeds, hopefully today, and post the results. One very interesting, and very disappointing, observation while tackling the rear wheels is the following:

Above is a screenshot from an early video examining the tech in the new Taycan. In the video, the Porsche rep made a big deal about the pieces of CLD affixed to the rear wheel well as a means to keep the car quiet. After researching auto sound deadening (for a longer time than is probably healthy) my initial conclusion was that Porsche's attempt to reduce resonance in the wheel arch was half-assed and not likely to make much of a difference. After removing the wheel liner, I discovered that Porsche apparently reached the same conclusion because the little pieces of CLD pictured above were nowhere to be found on my car.

@Tsingtao

Just curious, did your project progress further ?
I did indeed! And I have some more pics to post demonstrating my self-taught sound deadening techniques. The car is very, very quiet at 80-85 mph even with OEM Good Year 21 inch tires. My dB readings are consistently in the low to mid 60's on asphalt highways but who knows if the cheap-ass dB meter I purchased from Amazon is accurate. As Porsche drivers, we all want precision! I will, in the very near future (hopefully this weekend) be doing a comparison with my neighbor's 2024 S-Class which is regarded as one of the quietest rides on the road. We will compare the two cars with the same dB meter at various highway speeds. I did spend a ton of time ripping all the door panels and wheel wells apart, but it is pretty easy work and an added benefit is that I was able to address some of the minor jiggles coming from within the door panels. Stay tuned for more updates and pics.

Looking forward to it, especially the differences of the individual works you did.

Your meter might not be absolute accurate, but the relative differences are good enough for judgement.

Would suggest you try to measure unweighted (dBZ). The A-weighting filter heavily discounts the road noise frequency range, despite the fact that it is obviously annoying to the ear.

Your comparison to the S-Class will show an even wider gulf with dBZ which will more accurately describe the difference in how they sound. In terms of NVH, and especially road noise, W223 S-Class is vastly superior.

Not sure where you’ve been measuring. The middle of a car is quieter than towards the windows. The driver’s left ear would be one of the louder parts, and a good position for testing.

I noticed a big difference after switching tires—less road noise and a smoother feel. Also double-checked that my door seals were seated well, which helped cut down wind whoosh sounds.
What tires did you switch to?
