Got a pretty bad rock chip in my windshield. Luckily I have the windshield protection plan and plan on replacing the windshield but I wanted to wait until the winter season is over before replacing so I asked Porsche dealership if they can just repair it for now to prevent worsening but they said they can’t repair it and can only replace based off this picture. Do you guys think it can be repaired? If so, should I bring it somewhere else to repair for now until the winter is over and then get it replaced?

I would not repair that. Not sure how long ago that happened but expect the crack to get larger over time.

The integrity of the windshield is also a concern. If something else hits it or you get into an accident you can't expect it to protect you as well as an undamaged windshield.

That’s totally repairable.
Pick up a Permatex windshield repair kit ($12-15) and do it yourself. Any auto parts store keeps them in stock.

The results are professional quality. If you get to it before it grows much larger, you may even avoid a windshield replacement.

I always keep a kit in the car.

Oh, I wish I had a windshield protection plan. Mine is littered with tiny micro-chips that glitter in sunlight.

I took a gravel truck's spray to the face the first month I had the car :( I had PPF on the paint, but it got beat up too.

If you have auto insurance than most likely the windshield is covered at no extra cost...happened to me with my Macan Turbo and they replaced it minus a $100 fee. But the real problem was using Safelite...the installer dropped the VIN tag and could not find it. He told me to order another VIN tag and have the Porsche dealer install it when they do the calibration...

What a mess

I would repair that chip. I had a 2 foot long crack in mine last April and it took 2 months to get a new windshield. Plus all the magic technology had to be reprogrammed that was associated with the windshield. This was a pain to get it all done.

I had a new Taycan RWD and on the way to going to the dealership a rock hit it. There was no way to repair it but Porsche still declined the replacement. Finally they agreed but they wanted me to pay for the realignment of the camera. They would pay for the windshield and the calibration but not the realignment. I just bought another new Taycan but this time the Turbo S. Win win!!

I don't mean to gloat, but I have zero rock chips at 28,495 miles thanks to windshield protective film. The negatives are that it causes slight optical distortions and can permanently scratch, for example if you run the wipers on a dry, dirty windshield. The positives are that the film is far easier and cheaper to replace than the windshield, especially when you factor in sensor recalibrations and device remounting.

Living in Arizona, rock chips are a common occurrence. Arizona requires auto insurance companies to offer windshield replacement coverage at a fairly low cost. They will fix or repair at no cost to the insured. My replacement cost was $4500 at no cost to me! This was all done at the dealership with factory parts and calibration.

Hmmm so all those insured share the $4.5k x (number of high end cars insured) x (number of windshield replacements per vehicle over lifetime) cost. Would be best for everyone if insurance companies offered a discount to customers with windshield protective film, similar to having theft and accident/injury prevention devices.

Why I have STEK film on my windshield - a whole heck of a lot cheaper to replace film whenever it needs to be done and can absolutely verify that this stuff works as have had 2-3 hits that I am quite certain would have done damage had I not had this installed.

I have a chip that looks just like that on the 996. Took it to Safelite and the employee who handled the repair literally told me she "did her best". The crack looks about 5% better and fortunately hasn't spread in the last month, but I plan on replacing the windshield (again ). I would replace the windshield with a nasty one like that.

The windshield has pitted on every single Porsche I’ve ever had. I should look into this film after I replace the windshield.
I have STEK dynoshield windshield film. Been replaced once already. It's GREAT!
