I was recently charged £2500 for my new Porsche Tycan 4s just a few months after purchasing it for apparent stone damage to the cooling unit. Glasgow branch stated this was outwith its warranty as it was external damage. I have since read numerous posts about this , stating it as a design flaw. Would love to hear from other Tycan owners if they have come across this issue ?

If you want to discuss with another member who this happened to recently... https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/threads/small-rock-punctures-radiator-warranty-denied.18911/

It might take longer to find the product than it takes to install. Zunsport website is horrible. Why not grills>pick your model>taycan xxxx…??

I had the same radiator puncture, the result of a gravel truck spilling gravel on the roadway.
See the attached.....I haven't installed screens but it does appear to be a good idea.

Cooling unit or fans or both ? The fans are a well known issue by Porsche. I have had a set of cooling fans (apparently a modified version) replaced about a year ago (FREE OF CHARGE!!) after complaining directly to Porsche head office, but still have the exact same issue as before they were swapped out. Small stones & grit gather in the lower fan cowling jamming the fan blades. I complain to Porsche about this every visit as I have to wash out the grills every time I have been out in the car - not good enough in a £120k car !! Porsche know that some sort of modification to the grill area is required to stop the stones & grit getting in in the first place. Apparently the Porsche Boxster had an issue with the air intakes sucking in debris and a re-design was eventually done after many complaints from disgruntled customers. Porsche need to get their act together and get a fix in place ASAP. It’s not rocket science!! For such an impressive car to have such a stupid design flaw is not good enough.

Yeah, I had it with both sides, had it fixed FOC, not sure if it was a warranty job or just an admission it wasn't working as it should.

Does anyone know the parameters for the cooling vanes to close up?

I noticed them move around today after locking the car - thought it looked quite cool (!) and got me wondering as to how often the car closes them. My battery running temps always seem to be about 19degC. I thought optimal temps for the HV battery were higher than that, so would have expected the vanes to be closed often?

The HV battery on my 2020 4S, usually runs around outside ambient temperature, unless I am really putting demands on the motors. On the highway traveling at 70 mph, the battery temp will slowly rise, but never gets too far above ambient. When I charge, the temp will rise about 10-15 degrees F above ambient.

Interesting, my vehicle is currently with Porsche Colchester (4S 2020), and they have told me 1 of the 2 fans have seized and need replacing (recommendation both):

fault logged Right radiator fan (RF1) – blocked. SY, 1908 Noise symptom -
Humming from vehicle front end: Observe specified procedure (SY
117/22)- only right side fan is blocked.

They have told me this will cost £2.2k to repair, or £3.2k for both, however it sounds like the same thing you got done for free? Perhaps however, because your car was still within warranty at that point?

Mine is in Glasgow just now with 2 broken fans, so they tell me. Stone damage is the reason they gave me as well.

I am headed to the Porsche dealership tomorrow to have the driver's side front fan replaced under my extended Porsche warrantee. It has been occasionally noisy for the past year or so, but finally has failed entirely. It does not appear to have caused problems, most likely due to the fact that this 2020 4S has not been driven hard in hot weather, thus not needing supplemental cooling.
The cause appears to be the salty upstate New York winters....I expect the passenger's side fan will be due for replacement in the future.
I wonder whether it's a snowy winter climate problem or does this also occur in more benign climates.

@Alankarim - See above If your issue is cooling fans.

In my opinion, the fact that Porsche have found it necessary to change the design indicates that the original design is faulty. Contact Porsche GB Customer Services for help. If that doesn’t work, use the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Placing an unprotected fan within a wheel arch doesn’t seem like a reliable ‘fit for purpose’ design.

I wonder if the eTtron GT uses a different design? Unlike the Taycan, googling for the Audi equivalent, I did not find any similar battery cooling fan failures. Likewise on the eTron GT forum.

From Boxster/Cayman/911 forums and anecdotal reports, fitting these could invalidate a warranty. One side of the argument is that the grille protects the rads, the other is that they impede air flow. The daft part is Porsche themselves fit similar to some 911 models. May be worth getting dealer confirmation.

I've also read those concerns but I believe the potential radiator damage is worth the risk. So far, I haven't seen any significant temperature differences in the HV battery during multiple driving styles in hot weather.
