It turns out yes, M rating for Mercedes is their version of N rating for Porsche.

I find it very, very difficult to believe that these companies extensively work together to craft a tire product precisely engineered for a specific vehicle.

I tend to think these rating plans are more along the lines of marketing and bulk purchase deals.

"Hey, we like the way your tire works on $car. We want to fit them OEM, can we work out a discount deal and make it an official tire for the car, so people will buy them?"

Yes mine are Asymmetric 3. Came on the car at delivery. I will certainly consider the same brand again when it is time to change. And now I understand they have brought out the Asymmetric 5?

But I have always been a great fan of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and really hope they will be available as NFO approved?
They are now making an Asymmetric 6, but only the Asymmetric 5 is in the sizes to fit a Taycan, so far.

I'm on the Michelin website, and there are only two variants of the Pilot Sport 4S that come in 305/30/ZR21. One for the 911, and one for which I believe is a tire made for the Mercedes AMG GT.
I guess if it is good for an AMG, it would work just fine for a Taycan as long as the load rating is ok. But they might also be for one of the Mercedes SUV and that is heavy.

It won't outright void your warranty, but Porsche will have to prove it and they probably have the means to fight you to deny warranty work if they wanted to go that far. Why give them an excuse?

It's not just load rating, but an NF tire was tweaked by Porsche in conjunction with the tire manufacturer specifically for the Taycan, to find the best balance between noise, performance, rolling resistance etc. Sure, you can run any tire you want and have zero issues. Is it the optimal tire for this car? Probably not.

With that said, I've had Michelin PS4S tires on all my previous cars and it was a difficult decision to not go with them two weeks ago when I needed new tires on my Mission Es. But maybe not since the only available PS4S in 305/30/21 is a Mercedes spec tire...
Multiple skus at this place. I have no idea what the differences are:

Might not notice a difference for normal driving, but I'll have that nagging feeling I mounted a tire that was made to the specifications of a Mercedes SUV on my Taycan. :p

The 305/30 21" Michelin PS4S I just had installed are NAO. The load ratings were equivalent to the NFO tires per the tire shop, so I took a chance. I'll report back if I have any issues.

Thanks all - very helpful. It seems about 15k is average expectancy.

It’s not just about max load ratings. It’s about how they flex. Tires are part of the suspension system of a car and OEM spec tires are designed specifically for the suspension design and setup of a given car.

For me PZEROs have typically lasted 10-15k rears and 20-25k fronts, on all my cars. Based on wear so far, I’m expecting the high end of that on my Taycan. What I’d really like to try is a set of Race2s or Cup2s on this car if they made an EV spec of either, as both PZeros and PS4Ss roll over a little when you load them into a corner.

Found this thread late.....I have 47,000 on the original tires. I had summer wheels/tires last year, but most of the miles are on the current set. I'm maybe 70% worn on the rears and 50% on the fronts. I drive the car hard always. VERY happy with the Continentals.
The summer Pirelli's are a different story. They are showing more significant wear, but I'll get another summer out of them for sure.

At 20,000 miles, I’m still rolling on the Continentals that came with my ‘20 4S. I might have another 5-7k miles left on them, but am about to replace with a set of Michelin PS4. I’m hoping for better grip since those Contis rattled me a bit when driving in the wet.

Are you trying to turn your leisure limousine into a sports car?

Cross positing in case others are not on the other thread:

Goodyear Asymmetric that came on the car. RWD with 21 Mission E and 7,340 miles on it. I drive 1.5 miles to work and around town. On the weekend longer drives, but nothing more than 20-50 miles.

The SA sent a message that " the tires all have about 4.5-2MM of remaining tread." This is incorrect, they replaced one of the rears in October 2022 and my car has been stuck at the shop since January 21, 2023 with the red electrical error.

Does this sound like abnormal wear or is there some life left in them? I asked for a quote just to compare. Going to suggest they replace them as a goodwill gesture :p
