Hi,

After a very long wait I am due to collect my RWD ST tomorrow (performance plus with 150kW on-board DC-DC converter). I am transitioning from a BMW 530e and this is will be my first all electric vehicle.

Commuting to and from the office will be no issue as we have car chargers in our office car park - my anxiety is I do a lot of motorway mileage in my job and I need to get my head around how to best charge and when. I have ordered the Porsche charging card and I have also downloaded and set up the Shell Recharge app. Would these two options suffice for going up and down the M6 and M1?

I get I will learn as I go along but any pointers would be appreciated. I tried to see if there was already any similar threads but most seem to relate to the US and not the UK (if I've missed a thread then please point me in the right direction!).

I am in no way doubting my decision to go all electric, I am aware and prepared to have to spend time waiting for the battery to fill up!

On top of those, I downloaded/set up apps for:
BP Pulse
Osprey
Instavolt
MFG
Source
and a couple of others.

I haven't used many of these as mostly charge from home. But seemed to make sense to have just in case. I think the majority of chargers (EV police will say they're not chargers, but EVSEs!) will take a tap from a credit card too.

Main thing is to use Ionity where possible. It's the cheapest and fastest way to charge (with your porsche charge account).

Shouldn't be an issue BUT plan your journeys around charging stops as needed.

In car PCM Charging Planner (and My Porsche App) works well and ensure you target >= 50kW EVSE charging locations.

What you can't plan on is reliability of EVSE and availability when you arrive at it. The planner will list the availability but don't assume it will always be accurate.

Taycan Charging Card may be of limited use depending on availability of Ionity, Osprey, Porsche EVSE locations so best plan to carry multiple RFID cards from other providers or PAYG.

Take a look at ZapMap for route planning (there are others) as this may be more comprehensive than Charging Planner.

I didn't realise Osprey was part of porsche network. Does plan n charge work on it too, do you know?

There are a range of providers which are listed but I've never tried them.

As for plug and charge I've not had that work either (ever) - each time I've tried at a Porsche garage I've had to use my Taycan card. Only.used Ionity once and that needed the card but never used again as I had various random software errors immediately after charging..option is enabled on PCM.

Ta. Ionity worked a couple of time with plug n charge for me.

Where is the list of suppliers who work on the porsche card. My google abilities seem to be failing!

I had to search through the Charging Planner map and stumbled on Osprey, Fastened, Thereforce etc

No doubt there will be a listing somewhere.

I've just come out of an X5 3.0D so quite a change from 660 miles to current 220m range.

As above but also add Tesla app. There are 15 supercharger locations open to non Tesla... not that many around you but Manchester, Birmingham, Cambridge and Banbury are useful for me, sometimes have to block two spaces due to their short leads and posts on right hand side of bays.

MFG can be good as they are not on many peoples radar, expensive but useful for a quick top up when Ionity have a queue. I also try and have options.... on my run from South Bucks to North Norfolk last week I was aiming for Ionity at Cambridge Services but these looked to be fully occupied every time I checked the App so headed for Tesla at Trumpington which saved me 10 miles and I was able to drive straight onto a charger. 64p vs 30p /kwh but worth it to save queuing. Just had time to walk to Waitrose for a coffee while it topped me back up to 99%... there are very few options on the North Norfolk coast so wanted to arrive with about 70% SOC

you topped up your charge to 99% ?

That seems a really strange thing to do given how much slower it is to charge... any reason you didn't just charge to 80% ?

@mrdr01 forgive me for jumping onto this thread but I am sharing some of your concerns so finding this useful.

I read that you’ve ordered your car but not yet got it so this is about your prep. Correct?

I am in a similar situation and could receive my RWD ST as early as this weekend. It looks like you’ve pre-ordered your Porsche charging card. I thought this was something the dealer did for you when you take receipt of the car and they’ve configured the MyPorsche app.

can you share the process you went through and what you needed in place to do that?

Cheers, SD

Yep as I said in my post I wanted to arrive at my destination with about 70% SOC. There are only a handful of 7kw public charging points up here and all have been busy. The nearest 50kw/h chargers (only 2 working) are at Kings Lynn which is a 46 mile round trip in the wrong direction.

I added 29kw at Tesla which took about 20 minutes which just gave me time to grab a coffee and a bacon roll at Waitrose and then had to jog back to the car to avoid an overstay penalty.

I have done 252 miles while up here with the aid of some trickle charging using the PMC+ and a 13 amp socket.

I shall do the same next time I go to Anglesey to visit family - I need as much charge as possible when I arrive, not low like the app seems to think I’ll always want!

Tell the PCM.NAV to set minimum charge to be what you want. Use the App (or PCM) to plot your route remembering to set the correct battery charge at the start of your journey and then send to the car.
