I am looking for some friendly opinions on some vehicle options I am considering.

I have been looking at the Taycan and now the Macan Turbo EV. There are definite pros and cons to both vehicles. I am more of a car person vs. a SUV person. I currently drive a 2011 BMW E90 M3 (don't judge). Even though it is old, there hasn't been anything compelling enough to trade up to over the years until the EV revolution. I love the car and the engine and plan to keep it for the foreseeable future. While there have been newer and "better" cars that have come out, I wouldn't have the V8 and now getting a top spec M3 can't be done with a manual. I am looking for a big improvement in performance and moving to an EV to reduce my fuel bill.

I was leaning towards a 2024 Taycan GTS and was close to pulling the trigger when the Macan EV announcement made me change my mind. The Macan EV looked to be a better size inside and out and for the money and given the newer technology, seemed like the better choice. I was firmly in the Macan Turbo EV camp and built a model near $128k and am on an allocation list for one with no ETA. I have continued to think about the Taycan and realized my sticking points were the value I felt for the car, the size of the car, and its performance. The J1.2 is very interesting, but the price seems out of control. I realized a 2022 Taycan Turbo S was nearly the same price at the Macan EV and readily available today with nearly all of the options I am interested. This satisfies the value and performance I desire, but is still a large car with a small interior.

Is there anyone who has had similar struggles in deciding or switching between Taycan and Macan?
Is there any reason I shouldn't be looking at a 2022 Turbo S?
Any other opinions that would be helpful to make a decision?

I don't have a similar challenge, but it worked like a dream as an owner of a 2021 base Taycan (I know, it’s not even close to a Turbo S) as a daily commuter. However, I’m picking up one of the Macan Turbo launch vehicles from my dealer in September when the car is officially released. But I think there are two additional considerations: 1) Macan EV will have a much better range (300+ miles) than the 2022 Taycan (especially Taycan Turbo S) if that's something you care about. 2) Depending on the timeframe when you will need the vehicle, you will probably need to pull some strings from one of the nearby dealerships to be willing to sell you a Macan Turbo launch vehicle (I hope you like all the options). So, my recommendation is, if you don't care about range and you can't wait, get the Taycan Turbo S, or just wait for the Macan Turbo when more allocation becomes available. Sorry if it's not much help, but just my 2¢.

Also as a car person, after driving both the new Macan and gen 2 Taycan on the track back to back the other day, and while owning a Turbo S myself, the Taycan is a better car, especially in a Turbo S spec. Phenomenal to drive. And you can really find some fantastic deals on used ones right now. I would go this route myself.

If you decide to go for a Macan… I would also hold back and not buy a year one vehicle until the kinks are worked out.

I would get the Macan Turbo. I think the technology of the PCM with Android Auto will be much better than the current PCM OS. I have a 2022 Panamera GTS and had a 2020 Taycan Turbo and the PCM OS needs some improvement. The Macan is the first under the new leadership with the PCM OS and the slow rollout has been software. The negative is that the Macan is not the same driving experience as the Taycan. Have you considered leasing the Macan and picking up a 2025 Taycan Turbo in a few years as a CPO? The 2025 Taycan Turbo will be just as fast as the 2022 Turbo S with a bigger battery and faster charging.

My recommendations based on personal method used:
1. Throw away the pro/con matrix analysis
2. Drive both cars
3. Get the one you enjoy driving the most.
Agreed. Problem is you may not get past the Taycan if you try that 1st ?

Macan:

  • newest technology and more refined interfaces

About that... newest car porsche technology. Which is like 5 years behind mercedes, 15 years behind google & apple, 50 years behind tesla.

I wouldn't really put too much emphasis on this. I have checked it out, it's barely faster than current one... spotify still gets stuck and loads slowly. Map is faster...

If anything, I would say macan has better interior overall. More buttons, more space, better laidout.
Acceleration... they are both EV, so who even cares, it will be more rapid than most cars on road.
Driving dynamics... again, one is an SUV.

Choose based on how important the outside look is for you :D Other than that, both will be very similar minus one of them driving like a SUV.

Debatable. I'd say Porsche car tech is better than Tesla's. If you're talking about self-driving, well who are we kidding, it still isn't the self driving that was promised years ago. But I'll give you that one. Infotainment? Are you talking about an infotainment that is similar to Android/iOS?

Just stop with the Tesla technology is way better crap that is a sentiment shared way too often. Porsche cars have PTV, rear axle steer, PDCC, active ride to name a few....hell they just put an MGU-esque in the 992.2.

Exactly my thoughts ⬆?
From driving perspective, Taycan is #1.
Entertainment Software sucks, but i even don’t care anymore ?
Self driving? I love to drive, so i don’t care about that as well.

related to Macan? I doubt it will goon corners as Taycan goes. Will it have PDCC?

Taycan would be and more fun a satisfying car. If you want to be more practical, Macan would be better in terms of interior space. But Taycan Turbo S definitely has that curb appeal.

Good that you noted the depreciation, too. I got my Turbo S 60% off the retail price.

Thanks for the opinions thus far.

I would love to get out there and see or drive a new Macan EV, but the soonest the local dealership expects to have a demo car is September.

Range is not of paramount importance. I get 190 miles in my ICE car today per fill up. Getting the same at a fraction of the cost to fill up is not an issue.

Regarding technology, I don't need or want much. In the end it needs to integrate well wirelessly with an iPhone to access CarPlay. Beyond that, it should be smooth and have a pleasant design element to the GUIs. BMW screwed that up in iDrive 8 in my opinion where now it looks to be designed by engineers and not UI Designers.

I have 3 kids between 10 and 14 that will need to occupy that backseat as needed. We have a larger family car, but for various trips around town, would still need this car.

Anyone have experience with kids fitting?

Any advice for a target price for this car? It is a 2022 Turbo S with MSRP of $208k. I have seen several on Bring a Trailer that are 2 years old with prices selling or big to $112-120k.

What are the recommendations on the extended warranty? I have seen Fidelity as an option, but not sure if that is really an extension and will cover everything or is limited. I am also not sure if I would need to buy that now or wait until the manufacturer warranty would be ready to expire.

Does anyone have advice on how to inspect this car and make sure it doesn't have any issues? The dealer is not Porsche, but might be able to have Porsche do an inspection through their dealer network if that would be valuable. I am also remote from this location and would need to be very certain before making a trip there to pick it up. If anyone has similar experience, I would like to know how they recommend to handle this situation.

My 2 cents on that whole technology debate

1. Infotainment…I think the differences are overrated. Especially if you use CarPlay or android auto. Did my BMW M8 have a more refined interface? Yes. Does that matter? No.
2. Self driving tech is decades away. If you need that so desperately then a Porsche is not your type of car. Just for all the Tesla fanboys, Mercedes is the very first company that has Level 3 self driving tech officially approved and can legally claim it in ads.

FSD is going to take a very long time. They want it to work everywhere, not just in specific locations with specific required scenarios. That being said, a Tesla is pretty boring to drive in my experience. Driving was made too easy. Strangely enough, after getting the Tesla, I started getting interested in cars, specifically EV's. That's when I realized maybe a Porsche would be better. They say get a Tesla if you hate driving, a Porsche if you want to enjoy driving.

I'm not a big suv person either, so went for the turbo S.

I'd say offer $115k and see what they say.
