What charger have you installed at home?

Ok so you'll probably want something that is fairly discrete then rather than use your PMC+ which doesn't have the aesthetic qualities you might want.

Set a budget and looke at Zappi, Hive, Anderson, others - https://www.carwow.co.uk/blog/home-electric-vehicle-chargers.

Note the the reference to 'chargers' is misleading for the reasons given above. The charger is always in the car.

Check with your electricity supplier also as they might have something suitable.

Make sure you get a 32A fused supply from your main fuse board, 32A receptacle and cabling to ensure you get 7.4kW.

You can then use your PMC+ as a belt and braces portable unit using the 13A plug supply connection when off grid. Alternatively, you could install in a garage and simply run the EVSE to car cable under the door when needed.

I think I'm finally getting my head round it. I've gone back to the rep to confirm that a PMC+ will be supplied with the car. Like you say, that stays as a spare for when you're going anywhere that might not have a charging station nearby and, worst case, you can plug in in to a 13A socket and get enough miles to get to a services.

So this the charging dock and is essentially is a cover that sits on a PMC+ ?

Intsaller friend came back this morning and mentioned the Zappi 2 unit. We don't have solar (yet) so that looks like a sensible option for future proofing things.

I think I'll probably do what @Fish Fingers has done and add a coiled charging cable. What did you buy there mate? Is it a separate coiling mount or do you just wrap it round the Zappi?

Is it not best, just to buy the tethered version in my case if that's the ultimate plan for me?

The charging dock (I have one) is really intended for the Porsche Mobile Charger Connect (PMCC) rather than the PMC+. The issue is that the PMC+ is about half the height (depth) of the PMCC and therefore sits recessed rather than flush into the dock. It would look odd.

It could be that the latest version has been modified to support both PMC+ and PMCC - the picture shows an updated PMC+ or PMCC (can't determine which). Suggest getting more details from Porsche on the specific suitability.

The second link (PWCC) - is something different again and combines the dock with a 19.2kW (22kW) PMCC - so a dock and EVSE combined. It is not "rubbish" either - much negativity on this forum around any Porsche EVSE but that's really down to the expense and the temporary software limitation rolled out in USA.

Unless you have a) 3 phase electrical supply, and b) upgraded 22kW AC onboard charger in your Taycan then any EVSE which can support up to 22kW becomes pointless. The max power the standard AC charger is 11kW in the Taycan which on single phase provides 7.4kW. Three phase would also provide 11kW but let's not complicate things further.

So, if the dock above now supports the PMC+ (i.e. it sits flush) then you could use this to mount outdoors as it offers some protection and have a neat way to store the cables. My neighbour has a PMCC, no dock and has it exposed to the elements for the past year with no issues. Remember these EVSEs are all IP54 rated.

Going tethered makes sense but some people prefer the look of untethered and simply a wall socket / receptacle to connect the cable.

I went for the tethered version and it's fine. The cable wraps around it easily and becomes pretty unobtrusive when not in use.

I will be getting solar panels at some point in the future so the Zappi was chosen with this in mind and, at its price point, is a reasonable buy.

If you put a commando socket in you can just use the evse supplied 'free' by porsche - it comes with a commando plug.

Don't think there is any particular issue in going this route other than it may all be a bit untidy, charging cables lying around etc. I had a a commando socket put in our bolt-hole in the country and it works a treat. I just prefer to have a tethered unit at main home where i don't need to worry about plugging into the socket / potential weatherproof issues etc.

But will it work? Yes, definitely, just feels like more of an occasional solution (and you still need to put in the dedicated fuse spur etc).

I think they all do/did, not that it means the dealer got it back when he bought the car.

I've rarely used mine (had no problems) but apparently they can be a bit temperamental and after market ones are at least as good and cheaper. So if you go that route, then some sort of generic evse would be fine i guess.

Maybe check in the secret boot when you next look at the car, in case there is actually one in there.

They all came with a portable EVSE, some with the fancy one, when they ran out of the basic one, but most with the basic. A third party EVSE will be a lot cheaper and work just the same. Maybe negotiate a discount?

Why buy another EVSE when you get a perfectly good one with the car?

Ensure you have a 32A fused supply from your fuse box terminated in a 32A receptacle and use the cables which come with the car. This will give you 7.4kW - perfect!

Your point is most definitely valid, but unfortunately the previous owner did not give the original EVSE back, hence why I need to buy one, #sadtimes

How inconsiderate of them. Worth a conversation with the dealer as this shortfall should be reflected in your purchase price if not already done so.

Cheaper alternatives out there than source another from Porsche.

As a general rule you should not base your selection on the feature set of the EVSE as it is highly likely that you will disable these features to avoid any programmatic control conflict with the car.

I have an Easee charger at home as we wanted something as small and discrete as possible.

They were pretty new on the scene when we got it installed but it fits the bill perfectly and has been absolutely faultless in over 2 years of use.
