While my Taycan ST GTS order seems to be no nearer to being fulfilled, I am at least getting closer to having a garage to put it in, when it eventually arrives.

As the garage will have solar panels, the installer is proposing a Zappi EVSE (22kw, tethered) to take advantage of the 3-phase supply and integrate with the solar panels in the most efficient way. The charger will be situated in such a way that it will be accessible for 2 cars, albeit my wife doesn’t have an EV vehicle yet.

I know that, with the appropriate socket, the included Porsche Mobile charger will do whatever I need, but I can then keep this in the car for convenience.

By using the Zappi rather than the PMCC, do I lose any charging functionality? Anything else I need to think about?

Thanks

I've used a Zappi v2 with my Taycan with ZERO issues. I do not use the smart charging features from the charger – preferring to use the Profiles/Timers setup within the car itself to do off-peak charging.

My charging situation:
  • My charger is located in a shared underground parking garage under my apartment block – that has around 300 spaces.
  • It's two floors underground and therefore does not have any wifi or GSM signals available.
  • As the charger is mounted on a pillar near my parking spots – cosmetic's of the charger is not a major consideration – the more anonymous looking the better.
The reasons why the Zappi was a good fit for me:
  1. The charger has a screen and keyboard – so you can both control it and see what its doing (charging rate, etc) without requiring internet access or an app.
  2. The charger has physical keys – and you can set a PIN – so it reduces the risk that a neighbour might accidentally decide its a "community resource"!
  3. My Zappi uses the separate "Hub" which allows me to download the latest firmware in my apartment upstairs and then carry the Hub down to the parking garage to update the charger – very handy for those of us without internet at the charging location.
  4. It's possible to configure the Zappi to turn off the LED's and flashing lights – to make it more discrete.
I hadn't at the time of purchase appreciated that the PMCC charger also had PIN locking – if I had, I might have considered it just for branding purposes.

If you wanted to use a PMCC with solar and charge dynamically depending on available energy from the panels – I think you'd also need to purchase the Porsche Home Energy Manager – to handle the various power sources. The Zappi has this capability built in.

Many thanks for your comprehensive reply.

As my charger will be situated in a private garage and have internet access etc, many of your considerations do not apply to me, but they are interesting to read nonetheless.

Thanks

No downside at all. Functionality is via the app.and not the EVSE.

As @tigerbalm has pointed out there will actually be more benefits!
