CarPlay instead of Porsche system

I have little-to-no GPS signal in the car, so I have to use car nav (which has been really good as far as I’m concerned). I don’t want nav in the instrument cluster, so it stays on the center screen. If I want to see music at the same time, then I need to run music through the PCM. So, I usually just run music on my phone through Bluetooth.

CarPlay almost exclusively. The apps I use while driving are Waze, Spotify, Telegram, and Apple Message. And CarPlay supports them all.

I feel it's pretty much essential to be able to see where the cops/hazards are. Waze plus a top-notch radar and laser detector are pretty essential.

Thing is though, as someone already mentioned... CarPlay can take an unusually long time to load. Sometimes it's immediate and other times it'll take a good thirty seconds to a minute. Kind of a pain if I'm anxious to type in a Waze destination and hit the road.

I generally do not use carplay for music or nav. Where we live, the Porsche nav works just fine and the battery estimates seem reasonably accurate. Its still early days for us learning the car, but using the KISS method.

Having poor hearing these days (after 40+ years flying), I appreciate the feedback I get just from the pure driving of the car, …tire noise, ..wind,… screaming from my passenger ?.

However, when I want some music the Internet radio works great for us ( Austin City Blues ?).

Passenger screen just tells you to use Carplay on the main screen, sadly.

I've had my car 2 weeks and CarPlay would fire up each time. But on 2 out of 3 trips this week, it did not turn on and I could not figure how to activate it. Very frustrating as I like to use it to hear messages. So without it, I have only PCM.

For me CarPlay connects immediately every time. But the car’s built in Apple Music app sometimes takes a minute or two to be available (and sometimes it isn’t!).
So it is CarPlay for me.

Car navs are generally garbage compared to google maps or similar. Otherwise I would probably use the PCM instead of CarPlay. I like that I can have three screens in PCM and use it to display trip info. Then i can have general info showing on the dash (battery temp, voltage etc). But I use CarPlay when I need to navigate

I‘ve never seen 30seconds boot time.
when you sit down, close the door, fasten your seatbelt…you are all set to enter your destination…
On the other hand, CarPlay has its own “logic”…sometimes it stars immediatelly, sometimes it takes a minut….or few, so it’s like a box of chocolate: you never know what you gets

I think that the carplay in the taycan is flawed, every other car that I've driven with a wired connection carplay loads immediately, even in a panamera loaner the carplay worked flawlessly via bluetooth.

I noticed the following “connection”: few seconds after carplay stop working, i’m getting an error about SOS system failure (and small red light under the roof). It doesn’t occur every time, but often enough that I noticed that as a pattern.
Workaround: stop & lock the car….and light of SOS system will be green again…

Well seeing that a lot of you use the combo - I may spell the passenger display... I would like to use the default system of the car as much as possible. I mainly use CarPlay now in my BMW because the system in the BMW feels a bit dated...

If the PCM (the version with the color icons) is solid I will probably can use that one as a daily driver

I think think is something wrong with either the PCMs Bluetooth functions or the CarPlay implementation. About 1/3 of the time I drive, I see wierdnesses:

- My car says ‘No device connected’. Yet when I open ‘Devices’, my phone is listed and connected. And the CarPlay icon is illuminated but not functioning
- CarPlay won’t come on at all (icon is missing). So I listen to FM radio
- CarPlay appears, it looks like it’s playing but no sound comes from the car. It’s like the PCM is using the wrong audio source.
- CarPlay appears but when I play music (I mainly use Pandora), the time indicator doesn’t move. It’s like the PCM connected by Bluetooth to my iPhone but isn’t sending commands to the phone.

I have 100% success with Sirius and FM radio, but using Bluetooth for CarPlay music it only works some of the time. The next time this happens, I think I’m going to plug in my phone to see if I can get CarPlay running wired instead of wireless.

I listen to satellite radio (Sirius XM), but otherwise I use CarPlay for:

1. Apple Music
2. Spotify
3. Waze
4. Apple Maps
5. Google Maps
6. Calendar
7. Messages

I answered ”Combo,” however, because I spend a reasonable amount of time on Sirius XM.

Would you say the NAV on the PCM is not good or still decent?

This one never happened to me.
but I noticed that CarPlay worked much better in the beginning, so maybe it’s problem with iOS 15,?
i was even surprised since I read so many complains here, while I haven/t had any problems at all.
after upgrade of iOS, I also noticed different UI (on the dashboard), a screen when you can see artist, song and the lenght dissapeared,etc…

Tough to say. I've had my Taycan for 2-1/2 months and typically get the Apple updates which are pushed. The Bluetooth connection issue happens once every few days. I've been trying to make screen shots when something happens with CarPlay so I can show my dealer next time I'm at the shop.
