I clipped the hind leg of a deer this morning - no damage to car (or deer it seemed) thanks to the excellent Taycan brakes, but it set off the Pedestrian Protection Mechanism under the bonnet. I had no idea the car had this feature, but it apparently sets off charges under the hood and lifts it at the top, under the windscreen.

The problem is it's extremely expensive to reset and of course Porsche dealers won't touch it. Plus of course no one has the parts, so have to order them from Germany I expect.

I got my local garage to drop the bonnet back into place and if it wasn't for the permanent warning message on the dash, I'd probably just leave it at that. I don't suppose anyone knows a way to disable it entirely so I don't get the warning...?

I can't help you but I've never heard of this feature either. Can you share a pic?

I think a lot of cars have this now. Improves the pedestrian bit of the crash rating. Why won’t a Porsche dealer touch it? Seems a bit odd. You would think they could easily sort it. What is the likely cost?

I rang my local dealer, Porsche Tonbridge (where I bought it 3 months ago) and they said they no longer do any repairs ? My local mechanic was told by "Porsche Technical" (?) it would be £600 to replace the explosive hinges but had no idea how long it would take to get the parts.

I wouldn’t class it as a repair. If you had told them it went off randomly they would probably have done it as a warranty issue. So I bet they could do it if they wanted to

That is a good point which I didn't think of at the time!

You might be the first ever on the forum to have experienced this! Was aware of the feature but had never seen it activated. Perhaps try a different dealership for the warranty angle above?

I wanted to understand more about the function of this feature. Found the following description of a supplier's system:

The deployable hood system releases the hood hinges and raises the rear edge of the hood by about 4 in (10 cm). This increases the gap between the hood and the components within the front compartment. It provides additional cushioning in case the pedestrian makes contact with the hood.
Is the "cushioning" provided by lifting the hood/bonnet significant protection?

Here's the Euro NCAP test of the Taycan, cued for the Pedestrian Head Impact Test at 40 kph (the whole video is quite interesting/reassuring)-

When you say "clipped", what damage was done elsewhere?

The same thing happened to a work colleague last week, hit a deer in his jaguar ipace, it has an airbag in the same location. Evidently it only activates at a specific speed range so you must have clipped the deer at just the right (or wrong!) speed.

Tonbridge no longer do repairs?! How can they keep their OPC franchise?

Interesting and reassuring, as you say. Just slightly depressing watching those nice Taycans being destroyed

Zero damage. It's hind leg clipped the front bumper, but obviously not hard enough to crack it.
