Adding a picture of mine. That recall was way overdue! Those German engineers should stick to ICEs (although I like my Taycan).

Gave in and bought a Hubbell receptacle to replace the melted Leviton, and a Chargepoint Level 2 charger ($599 with tax - well below the $600 limit :)).

Agreed that research at Porsche engineering into American 240V componentry was sorely lacking but I have to wonder also if Leviton, etc. are not up to German design standards or expectations. I haven't seen much overheating at all (using 40A) and I attribute it to the installer knowing what's he's about.

This^. My electrician installed the outlet "upside down" at first. This presented a problem with the orientation of the EVSE/the lack of flexibility of the supply cable: there was no room to install the EVSE below, and the dock wasn't really meant for horizontal mounting. And so, reluctantly, I set about rotating the outlet myself - only to discover that one of the hot wires wasn't tightened.

I charge at 20 amps overnight to 80% for local or 95-100% for trip profile. I always check the cable when I go into the garage for heat and notice a little warmth if any. I thunk I'll take a chance and stay with what I have until the new cable arrives. My garage is detached so I won't die as a result of a massive failure. Will get the improved CT if it does burn down.

FWIW, I've been charging Teslas with their mobile 240V charger connected to a Leviton 15-40 outlet since 2014 and it still looks brand new. The one in the picture above has only ever been used with the Porsche charger, less than 18 months. Anyway, I'm glad I caught it in time, not sure how much longer it would've lasted. Fingers crossed that my new setup (Hubbell outlet + Chargepoint charger) is safe.

What's the weight difference between the Leviton and Hubbell? FWIW, I have 6AWG high temp wiring to the Hubbell receptacle, and never really worried about the heat issue.

I can't tell a huge weight difference, the Hubbell appears much sturdier though.

Ok, so much for my theory; for sure Tesla would know to test multiple U.S. 240V outlets, esp. in the early days. Thx.

it’s integrated into the holster - look more closely - you won’t be able to extract it with out power

I charged my Taycan 4S today to 75% and checked the temp of the cables.
I was charging with 8.5 KW and the cables weren't even warm.(it's 50 F here today)
I wonder if it helps that all the electrical components are within a foot of the panel box, so cable lengths are very short.
I am inclined to simply continue with what I have....the Porsche charger/cables that came with the vehicle.
The receptacle is a Leviton, and shows no sign of heat damage.
We have until August 31, 2024 to file a claim, so if things change, I still have time to do it.
A Porsche driver who likes to live on the edge - true to form!
