I haven't seen much posted about the Taycan's dual speed rear transmission.

i do see several people mentioning EV's SHOULD be more reliable without the moving parts of an ICE car - no cylinders, no transmission, etc - yes that's true with most EV's - but not the one we're all here about - the Taycan

I haven't looked into this - if it's the same as in ICE vehicles or a different technology - but i'm wondering - do ya'll expect it to be rather worry-free? If i plan on keeping this car 5 or 7 years - you think it'll need work? I haven't seen many (any?) people saying theirs has given them an issue - but my warranty ends rather soon and last thing i want to do is pay for a Porsche transmission out of warranty.

i'm 24k miles in, almost 3 years - and my car feels, looks and drives practically like it did on day 1. I don't mind keeping it a while - but that's the only part of the equation i'm not sure about

Thoughts?

Based on what I've seen and read, there have so far been very few problems with the transmission. It's a robust system that is at its core simple and not nearly as complicated as some other types of transmission systems.

That being said, any and all systems in a car will eventually have an issue. Will be interesting to see how long it lasts, but I suspect it will last for a long time.

I thought most EVs drove the road wheels via a gearbox of some sort? Very few are direct drive like the Rimac Nevera.

During normal driving it’s basically a 1 speed transmission so it doesn’t a lot of use. I am not concerned just yet.

That was my understanding as well, since the electric motors spin up to ~19,000 RPM. Even the direct drive versions minimally use a reduction gear, I believe.

Even many of the high end ICE transmissions (ZF) are now sealed with "lifetime" fluid, although other (edit) forums suggested fluid and filter replacement at around 10 years. I'm not worried about the transmission in my Taycan.

It is based on the excellent ICE PDK. But a slight difference in use from ICE is the regen. Every time you step on the brake, transmission loads are reversed, and power is sent the other way, which doesn't happen as much in normal ICE driving.

If you plan to keep that long, maybe an extended warranty is worth the $? But idk since the main concern is the battery and you are getting 8yrs/10k miles covered.

Not too worried about the transmission but definitely get an extended warranty.

I'm the original owner of the 2021 Taycan. Warranty good another 11 months. Can i buy an extended warranty from Porsche - or is that jsut an option for buyers of used cars through them?

I'm a little concerned.
Since I changed from Range that uses 2nd most of the time, to Normal that uses 1st and 2nd, the gear change feels a bit rough.
Changed on secondary roads where sharp turns are encountered, because of the rear tire camber wear issue.
Spirited acceleration gear changes are smooth however.

Yes…but I’d like to add an emphasis on “the electric motors” as it’s a property of the specific eclectic motors being used and not a property of electric motors generally. The rpm will be a function of the output frequency and pole count. The frequency dictates the rate of movement from pole to pole. But you can add poles and have slower rotor rpm for a given frequency.

Ring motors are like this and are typically used direct drive with no gearbox. They have a higher pole count at a larger diameter resulting in a lower rpm and higher torque (which is what the gearbox otherwise accomplishes).

Example:

You can buy an extended warranty in the US - not sure in other countries. It is handled by a third party but purchased from Porsche sales. From my previous post:

Our 2020 Taycan Turbo S warranty expires in less than two weeks. We Added a 96-month, 60,000-mile, $100 deductible plan from our Porsche Beaverton salesman (Gregg Rennord) for $4,387. Months are from the new vehicle delivery date. We chose 96 moths to align with the HV battery warranty. Failure of one major electronic or mechanical device will almost certainly cost more to repair at retail than the insurance cost.

We will add this protection to our incoming Macan turbo electric because the insurance cost will be much higher four years from now.

Here are the prices quoted, the cost per month and mile are my calculations:

That's awesome - I'll reach out to my guy, thanks. I won't mind holding onto it a couple of years after the basic warranty ends knowing i wouldn't have to pay loads of money for center screen going out or a brake light flickering or the AC going bonkers

of all the things on Taycan to be worried about the transmission is not sorted to the top 1/2 of the list…

I'm much more worried about the digital screens, charge port, on board charger, PCM computer, etc…things for which Porsche lacks history have demonstrated problems - transmissions come from a deep well of experience w/Porsche - not saying they are immune to problems, but statistically there are probably 100's of expensive things to fix/repair on a Taycan before the transmission.
