If Porsche is delaying 718 / Cayman EV, it's due to technical reasons, and not market reasons. Maybe they decided to rework some parts of it. Latest rumors suggest that all the battery will be in a block, similar to an engine, instead of a skateboard placement along the bottom; so the car has more of a traditional sport feeling. So maybe something to do with that.

That being said, I think any 718 / cayman EV delays are just unfunded rumors. The cars continue to be tested, and this winter they are due to be tested at the arctic.

Porsche has the chance to be the first true 2 door sport EV on the market. They would have to be stupid to miss that chance.

And even though not a confirmation of anything, when I expressed my interest in the cayman EV, as a move from my taycan, my dealer proposed to make a reservation for early 2025. So I assume that date is not coming out of thin air.

And a Taycan ICE is absolute bollocks. First of all, the Taycan has no space for a v8. If they would put it in front, they would have to change the whole face of the car to accomodate it; therefor making it just another Panamera. If they would put the engine in the back, then that would remove the whole boot. Who's gonna buy a 4 door sedan with no boot? Absolute bollocks.

My only hope is that the cayman EV / 718 EV will have 2 back seats / space behind the seats just big enough to fit a dog ?
Battery is mounted vertically from what I understand and behind the driver. My dealer was speaking with one of the test drivers in London recently.

I had a good look at a 718 EV test car – at the arctic circle centre in Norway – of all places – last year. They asked me not to photograph it – so I obliged – but I did get to put my head into the cockpit and have a good look around.

Some random observations – and I don't think there is anything new here:
  • 2 seats only
  • "Chest battery" in compartment rear of the seats – where the engine would be in the ICE variant.
  • Physical AC controls similar to new Macan/Panamera – rather than middle touch screen on Taycan.
  • Otherwise had the "Taycan" style cockpit – that really has become Porsche's design language across all of its range.
  • Rear charging port above where exhaust is on ICE 718's.
  • Metal roof
  • While I didn't see it – I could imagine there is some storage compartment in the rear – though no clue how big.
I had my head in there about ten seconds – so that is all I could gleam. Vehicle was lightly camouflaged – especially in the front and with fake exhaust sticker in the rear – that would fool nobody!

The proportions looked nice. I guess – being on a 14+ day road trip – I'm wondering is a 718 EV a realistic vehicle for such a trip. It feels like its luggage holding capability would be too small – and not sure a roof rack would be desirable on such a vehicle. Its like a "weekend" car.

There was a second 718 EV test car and a Cayenne support vehicle (likely carrying the luggage!)

We'll have to see when it (eventually) comes out. 718 ICE production has been moved from Zuffenhausen and the 911 factory has been fully tooled to produce 718 EV – including all workforce training being completed.

Please no. I want as large as a boot as possible. Otherwise this is just a sunday afternoon car with no possibility to take it on a 14 day road trip. :)
I understand where you are coming from, but porsche themselves have said that for the latest 911, those “baggage” / half seats in the back, were the number 1 request from owners and fans by a massive long ass mile.

So clearly the customers value this option.

And let’s be real, it is Porsche, it will be a paid option if it will exist. It will not be standard or free

As for people concerned about baggage space in a 718 EV, the car still has a hood; and in theory there should be close to nothing underneath it. So plenty of space for a big “frunk”

Is this because we think there won't be a AWD option with a front inverter & motor?

The thing is that if there are normal back seats my wife will insist only LV bags are suited for the back seat. :)

There’s no reason the front motor needs to be the biggest in the industry all of a sudden; wasn’t the case with the taycan either

We will see how they package the electronics, but there is absolutely 0 excuses to not having a “frunk” from my point of view.

internal packaging is the critical thing any car manufacturer should take away from Lucid

I heard the rumor, the shift away from an EV strategy and this:

I hope its not true, especially as I want the Turbo GT as my next car.
This made me chuckle because
1) I so really want to watch those two blokes babble about what "sources" have told them about just anything ?
2) the claim is so evidently nonsensical for anyone who has a cursory understanding of the regulatory context in which OEMs have to make product planning adjustments.

The extension of ICE lifespans is real but transient. Meschke has said as much.
A 718 refresh may make sense, but an ICE Taycan does not.

Perhaps they'll be on the wheels...

This is the irony of "America First." Yes, we were... but we'll soon be last.
For volume, only Chinese OEMs will thrive in China which was Porsches biggest market. With the new administration, US EVs are in question too.

I have 4 EVs, I wont drive an ICE unless its a raw sports car.

I own both a Taycan GTS ST and a BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport, and have driven several 1,500km road trips over the last few months in both cars. I can tell you that the BMW often needs less time to charge over the whole journey because it is more efficient than the Taycan. The average charging power may be lower in the i5 than the Taycan, but you're actually adding more range per minute.
In similar position and same opinion owning a Taycan GTS and i4 eDrive 40 M Sport. BMW goes to 205kWh really fast and keeping nicely. Taycan goes higher, but the i4 consumption is 65-75% of the Taycan. OK, less tire and much less power on the i4 side without AWD, so not complain.
