I wonder if insurance companies calculate risk according to claims by model year?

Extracts from the J1.2 Porsche Newsroom release:

Various weight-optimisation measures, such as the glass fibre composite underbody guard, improve robustness while simultaneously reducing the weight of the battery by nine kilograms.

Similarly, a higher cooling capacity enables faster cooling of the battery even at high ambient temperatures, so that it can be charged with a higher capacity. The coolant hoses are now laid in such a way that the excess heat from the drive system can be used even more efficiently for interior heating.

This is the 3.33mm dent I got, right in the centre of the car

This is what the protection plate is protecting - there are no visible coolant lines, then run at the top of this 'membrane' - this was never taken off as part of the inspection and when my HV tray was replaced they never sent any visible 'proof' that the coolant lines were indeed pinched

The membrane purpose is probably to seal off the battery and prevent moisture entry - a safety and operation issue - with 3mm tolerance. If breached, you’d assume the membrane could be removed and replaced, also allowing inspection of the cooling and battery system.

We know from other posts that driver alerts occur if temperature or voltage monitoring detect a fault condition. If damage can result in water ingress or cooling system damage and no alert occurs, that seems a safety risk.

An informed opinion about all of this from a HV tech would be very useful, if the OP @Talisker can get one. Or from the Porsche GB CEO office, [email protected]

@Maelstrom - would the NTHSA system allow reporting of a safety incident with your scenario?

I think the coolant channels are, for efficiency, flat channels integral with the metalwork, not separate lines.

Hi, I asked for a photo, should get it tomorrow
You'll want to pay close attention to the location of any dent(s) relative to the varying (by location on the plate) tolerances given by Porsche.
Ask them to include a caliper or calibrated depth gauge illustrating the depth in each photo of any dents.

I saw that video before, unfortunately he doesn't do the underside of the HV Tray but just focusses on the modules themselves
I’ve not yet rewatched it, I thought it might show cooling system tube locations.

I wondered if this also afflicted Teslas. A 5 min Google found a couple of examples.

Similar to Taycan, the material of the cover was changed in 2023 to provide more protection. A comparatively massive dent tolerance of 8mm is allowed! But Tesla ground clearances are also higher. See #17 above for Taycan clearances, those for Turbo can be 105mm

https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/underbody-of-the-battery-bent-from-impact.303013/

Also similar to Taycan, the scale of the issue is unknown.

*Tesla minimum ground clearances:
The Tesla Model 3 has a ground clearance of 5.5 inches (140 mm) for the standard rear-wheel-drive version and 5.2 inches (133 mm) for the all-wheel-drive version.
The Model Y has 1.3 in more ground clearance than the Model 3

J1:
https://newsroom.porsche.com/en_AU/products/taycan/battery-18557.html

The cooling elements have been placed outside the actual battery box and are glued to its underside so as to allow heat transfer.

Asking for it?

J1.2:
https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/press-kits/taycan/Der-Antrieb.html

The coolant hoses are now laid in such a way that the excess heat from the drive system can be used even more efficiently for interior heating.

At the moment the J1.2 cooling system location change detail is unclear to me.

Out of curiosity, did you ask if possible to replace/retrofit the new undertray of J1.2? it supposed to be more resistent and lighter (carbonfiber).

I've no idea how it happened, but on a recent recall my attention was brought to a ding on the undertray.
As it protects the battery, I was advised that warranty wouldn't cover the battery if there was an issue.
At the time I was quoted £2,500 to replace the undertray and inspect the battery. As I had no degradation in range, I suspected the battery was fine and therefore sat with the issue.

I then had a warranty fault in that the heater failed, it turned our to be a server (servo) motor and I asked for the undertray to be replaced, the price then jumped to over £6,000 and if the battery was damaged it would be a further £26,000!

Do these numbers sound about right?

Also when fixing the the heater, they discovered that the remote parking was faulty.
