Collecting 4S Tomorrow - 1st EV Drive Range Anxiety!

Collecting my J1 4S ST tomorrow (see here) and driving home. It's a 230 mile trip starting in Guildford heading to the NW. The battery will be at 100% on collection. Do you think I will safely make it to Stafford (161 miles) before needing to recharge as estimated by Electroverse? (I'm not convinced 6 minutes will provide enough charge either!).

It's a Friday afternoon in a storm! I'm thinking probably wiser to try and stop before the M6 Toll. Thoughts?

Get A Better Route Planner app, ABRP, and put in your phone and vehicle. This will help you plan charging. Use the car’s built charging finder, that is in the Nav tab on the PCM (CENTER OF CAR’S Dash). To avoid a cardiac incident(?), start looking for chargers at about 40%. Then refuel. Study the charging procedures for the charging network or networks you plan to use. These are a PITA.
So, in a nutshell ==>be ultra conservative with your charging until you see how the car consumes fuel.

==>Learn how to charge at the different charging networks.

Going on a long journey first time out is probably *not* a good idea, you may run into problems and panic, especially is fuel runs low. I’ve been there. If possible, travel with someone who has an electric and use that person as your wingman. Good luck!!

Thanks! That all sounds like very sound advice. I'll aim to charge at about 40-50% and examine exactly what is there.

11 months into my 1st EV ownership, the tip I would give is that if you find yourself stopping for a toilet or comfort break, even if just for 10mins, plug it in. On a rapid charger you will be surprised how quick it can add miles in just 10mins!

Search for a GridServe or Ionity (as you have there. Ionity are cheaper, GridServe more reliable IME. Though I've only ever seen one conked out). Plug your address into the sat nav. Get the dealer to show you how to change your stopover point if it doesn't select one of the above, and then crack on ?

The Porsche on board nav should show chargers along the way, and how many are free etc. And will change stopover if the intended one gets busy.

As noted above, go for a pee, grab a drink and by the time you're back the car will likely have enough to finish the trip.

I don't believe you have a charger yet, so I'd charge late in the trip and get it nearly full so you have a decent amount of juice to play on Saturday.

That plan seems perfectly good to me. I’d need a comfort break by that point. Suggest entering your destination in the PCM before you set off, the add that IONITY as a stopover in your route. Make sure the PCM identifies the stopover as an IONITY (not just somewhere close by). You can press the 3 dots in the bottom left of the Nav screen and set a preferred arrival charge level at your destination. Set it to something you are comfortable with (I’d suggest 30% or more). It will then nicely show you the required time charging. it will even show in realtime how many pedestals are available. It won’t need long! Last time I stopped at that IONITY I arrived with 20% (nicely preheated as I’d preentered it as a stopover), plugged in, went for a pee, bought a coffee (didn’t drink the coffee though) and the car had reached 70% already. It’s almost too fast at charging!

PCM is very good at predicting arrival charge, which should give you confidence. If in doubt just give it a 5 min blast while you stretch your legs.

last week I did Bristol to Birmingham and back (200 miles) on a single charge. Arrived back with 11%.

The answer depends on how heavy your right foot is!

Stafford Ionity can be busy at peak times, but it's 2 minutes from the M6 junction so it's a good location. There is a Starbucks next door.

Plug in, get a coffee, you'll have plenty to get you home.

There is an alternative in Stafford. EON 300kW. Address: E.ON Drive Charging Station, 4 Bailey St, Stafford ST17 4BG. It's next to a TK Maxx and there is always a charger available. It accepts the Porsche charge card if you have one.

You'll get over the range anxiety. I've had mine for 3 years now, traveled into Europe a few times without issue. Only had range anxiety once, in Italy, when the charger was not where the map said it was!

You'll be fine. The onboard sat nav is the best I have found as it updates based on driving style etc. Super reliable and I will happily let it run to a station where I will arrive with 10 miles range. The speed of charge on an Ionity is super cool up to 85%, barely enough time for a coffee. Defo agree with others though first time out stop at a % you are comfortable with and keep an eye on chargers available where you are due to stop so you pull in earlier if it looks busy. the cost on non Ionity is high but you'll not need much charge so it is not the end of the world if you want speed and peace of mind.

I plan meal stops with charger location on ABRP or Zapmap and plug in whilst I eat or have a snack. At a fast place it is amazing how much charge you get and I have always got more than I needed on a 200 mile journey.
Even just stopping for a pee on the motorway, plug in.
I use the native sat-nav which works well here in the UK IME I sometimes use Waze and it seems recommended in a lot of foreign countries (it was a Brazilian friend who uses it in Manaus who recommeneded it to me) but it gives really crap routes for journeys I know so I have low confidence in it for those I don't.

I find it is most relaxing to have a plan before you leave.

Yep, Ionity at Stafford is an ideal spot to stop. You'll have 40 to 60 miles left, which is plenty. There are Gridserve fast chargers at the next services north of Stafford, too.

With my previous 4S CT, I would get 210 to 220 miles at this time of year on a motorway run to just north of Birmingham.

When I first started using public chargers, my bigger anxiety was whether they would connect properly to the car. Whenever they haven't initialised & connected immediately it's been my error. Make sure you definitely turn the ignition fully off (car won't charge with it on but chargers just report 'Connecting...' so it seems more like a comms fault until you realise). To put your mind at rest and build confidence on this first trip, try a small charge of say 20% at about 60% just to build your confidence.

You must have had all of the recalls performed. My car currently restricts charging to a top limit of 80%. I think Porsche did that over the air because my profile has always been set at 85% unless planning a long trip where I would go to 100%. Can't get past 80% at the present.

You'll be fine. Right after I bought my J1, I took it on a 1100 mile round trip. Dove right in to the deep end. No problem as I just did what the Porsche nav told me to do....

If you do stop off I would avoid Oxford services as the are off the motorway and cater for both north and southbound and in my experiences there it invariably rammed

if you have Performance Battery Plus, you will ABSOLUTELY make it 161 miles.
