With my luck, I will have just put new tires on the week before it self destructs

Anyway, I was sure I would renew because I used the app so much in the beginning, mainly for charging testing, but I wasn’t really using it anymore by the time it expired and I didn’t end up renewing. Don’t need it; don’t miss it.

Agree with @whitex on points about cost though.
Wondering about the same...
Can you pre cool/heat the car still?

My Taycan still drives like a Porsche without Connect and CarPlay more than suffices for my tech needs (and is MUCH less glitchy). -22 Taycan 3.5 year owner with 29K miles

Not sure. We never used that feature in the first place. I would assume not through the app (I don’t have the car in the My Porsche app at the moment; deleted it by accident and haven’t bothered re-adding it). I would assume it still works with a timer if I scheduled it in the car. But again, not something I ever used, so just speculating.

Part of it too is that the Taycan is my wife’s car; she can’t be bothered with fiddling with an app (she never used the app at all), and I barely drive the car anymore as I prefer my 911.

Nothing against the car. She loves it and when we go to replace it, 95% sure it will be with another Taycan (the last 5% is if I convince her to get an electric Cayman when/if they ever come out).

Of course people would like it for free. However most will pay the current price, so that means it's worth it to them, despite their protests.

I would like to offer a counter point to free. If something is free, there is absolutely no incentive to keep it running well. Yea, I know, brand image, etc. but that means marketing needs to now include maintenance of cloud servers and apps and car firmware in their "brand image" budget. Yes, turns out people don't want to work for free, electricity and internet is not free, hardware is not free. Maintaining internet connected devices to keep then secure for 20+ years is actually REALLY expensive (go ahead, show me a 20 year old cell phone which is secure today, or a PC, or any other internet connected device produced 20+ years ago which can still stay secure on today's internet). Put it this way, if a free service is out, you can get your $0 back for each day of however many weeks or months it's broken. On the flip side, if you pay for a service, there is a financial incentive to keep things working, because if you have to refund everyone, you lose money.
Yes, you are correct except in my opinion the services offered and the user interface of the app isn’t high end. It is pretty basic and not that well designed. It isn’t a $300+ a year app. So if they are spending all of the money you laid out to produce what they are producing they need to go back to the drawing board because it is amateur.

I shall renew and I would prefer it to be free, but free software with free updates is only worth nothing too.
Except the Tesla software works much better and is free.. well.. you don’t loose much if you dont pay.. you can use your phone as a hotspot.. you only need to pay 10 / month for the connection if you don’t want to use your phone..

But yeah.. it’s just the price you need to pay if you wanna drive a Porsche..

I also agree the functionality of the Porsche app pales in comparison to the Tesla app

on a side note : what I really don’t understand, in the Porsche app there is no way to select the amperage you want to use while charging ?

You are not wrong. Porsche app would have a hard time charging $300 a year if it were competing against other apps which can control your Porsche. However, they don't have to compete - they have a effective monopoly. The question each customer needs to answer is "is this service worth $300 to me", rather than "what is the best app at best price that I can get to do this". If there was open competition for an app controlling your Porsche, then it would be a different story.

True again. For me it is a principle thing. With how expensive this car is I think it should be included. Especially considering it is just basic shit they are offering. I obviously can afford it, but I don’t feel like I’m getting taken advantage of.

Could it be that the difference is that you recognize the Porsche brand value on the car, but not on the app?

Yes. I definitely see the value of the car. It is an amazing piece of machinery. The app is basic and offers basic functions. I don't see much value in it, and the little value I do see in it I feel should be included in a $150,000 vehicle.

Included does not mean free, it just means you paid for it up front and have no choice. I think Porsche came to the same conclusion as you, perhaps listened to surveys, so they added probably ~$1,500 to the price of the car to cover 7 more years of Porsche Connect (with 100% take rate and 7 year commitment, they can price it lower than $319 a year, though they also need to allow for dealer profit if part of MSRP).

If they are in fact paying the subscription, that means they decided it's worth it, or else they would not pay it, like you.
Porche in China only knows how to rip off customers with insane prices, but has ZERO service!

I might be interested in paying for the subscription, if I could get the app in the first place. I had it for a while from a Chinese app store, but it was the same for western app stores on google play. So everytime the app from google play was updating, the Chinese connection was lost. Would need to delete the app, find it on Chinese app store, reinstall app, login, etc...

After purchasing the car I spend some money in the app to get in car connection with China Mobile. Never got the service going. Just wasted money. No other connect services are available in China. The only thing I could use the app for was to see SoC and switch on the AC, and that often did not work. Car connection to slow, not good enough, etc...

Are you sure I am just too cheap to spend money on this?

I never said you were too cheap, simply that you decided it was not worth the money for you. Given the description of your experience with the app, I am not surprised. I suspect you might not even use it if if it was free, having to reinstall the app all the time, dealing with unreliable functionality, etc.

I ever only used it after playing golf switching on the AC while taking a shower.

The money is irrelevant, that fact, that I have one more hurdle to actually use it, pushes it over the edge...
