Right guys so I have good news and bad news.

First the good: The V1.0.0 of the app is coming soon with paid features and many other new free features! It will be a massive update the likes of which nobody can even remotely imagine:D

Bad news: PCM updates are CANCELED. This is because the update process doesn’t come without risks.

Last year I killed one PCM while updating it, of course we paid for it. Today I killed another customer’s PCM while updating it to version 3882 (not even the 9J1.2).

This also happens regularly at the dealers, they kill many PCMs too because the update process is a piece of shit.

i don’t want the reputation of my app to be tarnished by the odd bricked PCM which sooner or later will happen and I also don’t wanna feel bad about nor be responsible when one of you guys bricks his PCM.

so PCM updates wont be an official feature in the app.

Having that said if someone fully understands the risks and still willing to proceed forward perhaps something can be worked out through DM.

buy it and cancel it straight after everything updates.

ah man, that's disappointing. so are you saying that if it fails, you can't re-try to update? or re-install the "existing" version? (3882).
Is it 100% bricked?

Yep… Porsche for you. Even this happens to the dealers that’s why they always run away from PCM updates.

of course with over 200 cars updated only 2 bricked… but yeah

Do you know in more details how it fails, or what exactly fails? Maybe someone else from the community is willing to tinker around, and find a solution.

I know from my dealer that the process takes hours, and any hiccup, you're supposed to start from 0 again. He also mentioned no rollback or backup functionality, it's just overwriting.

It is a bit wired that once it fails, you can't just re-install from 0 again. I'm suspecting some sort of UID/electronic signature that needs to match with what's signed on the rest of the ECUs.

Maybe an idea of business for @prj is to sell already updated PCMs :)) - i have no clue how involved a PCM replacement procedure is.

also , what sort of price are you looking at to replace whatever part is bricked ?

this really does just sum up how utterly useless Porsche is at literally anything software related. I don't think I've come across any piece of technology in the last 20 years which is not recoverable after flashing custom code on it, let alone flashing official software updates. it's beyond pathetic :-(

Look, to be honest the one PCM I "bricked" today... In the end I got it back within the day and returned the car to customer in same day with fully succeeded update

But I had to use my genuine Porsche dealer PIWIS TESTER 4 with my PCSS account which has an ONLINE feature to redo the update starting from 0% (this would be extremely time consuming for me to do remotely to someone who bricked this is ECU)

This is what happened today completely frozen in this screen with no response whatsoever

BUT last year I had one case where the update seemed to have succeeded but upon booting a lot of things including even app icons were missing

This one specifically I never got it back even redoing the whole procedure 3 times - in the end I had to pay a new PCM for customer

At the end of the day for a mere $99 for update that I was planning to charge, I dont wanna commit to spending hours upon hours every time someone bricks his PCM. Also the impact on the reputation of the software would be egregious if some people brick their PCM using it even if a small percentage

This has been encountered by my dealer also, back when they were doing the first big update to PCM6, which introduced colored icons.
Hasn't had it since, but I guess you did.

Truly a pity that the software and hardware is designed so badly that simple updates can't be done without risk of bricking the hardware. CARIAD has truly been the biggest mistake of VW group of the last decade.

I am still hoping that Porsche does an official update campaign, like in 2022, or a solution is found eventually to keep the PCM updated.

Thanks for trying :D

indeed. well if I could download the update file from somewhere I think i would still take the risk and attempt it. but alas the files seem to not be available anywhere that I have scoured.

Given the previous pages, I think my battery health looks fine too (Vdelta and isolation values).
Thanks for the scan tool!

Sooo back on topic…

Someone I know from this forum asked his dealer about the update, and that dealer is willing to do the update. Did others already ask their dealers? How much I like your app @ct14garage for me it was out of the question to update. When something fails my car has to be towed to the stealership (DerekS, 2024 - trademark pending) and pay for my own fuck up. Probably cheaper to pay for an update and loaner.

can you tell more about the coming update? What kind of tooling do you want to sell to other workshops? Diagnostics?

I think I know that guy!

Actually, I am the one that requested the Stealership (DerekS, 2022) @DerekS to update with the latest software during the 60k km service. I specifically requested this latest version to be installed as mentioned by Christian @ct14garage.

They confirmed they will get it done. With pleasure!

Well, I will let you all know if that has been done on the 21st july. Only time will tell.

I guess they will be able and willing (!) to do it as official PC. They told me if I need a loaner a day longer it is not a problem at all as they said the update will take time (generally they run it overnight).

Will keep everyone informed and will list done any new features if I get that version. Hope so!
