Porsche is reported in this article to have prototyped fake gears à-la-Hyundai N.
To me, this sounds like gimmickry that should become standard on all sporty-pretending chinese EVs, but which is too far from the Porsche ethos.

The Cayenne Coal EV is even more nostalgic. Porsche engineers have spent countless hours replicating the look, sound, feel and smell of antique coal-fired steam engines in order to appeal to drivers who are still pissed-off about ICE replacing steam engines. It looks a little strange, but early reports indicate that it handles like it's on rails.

I test drove an Ionic 5 N to experience this, and it's a very nice gimmick, i would take it over the existing sports sound feature, and i'm sure Porsche is going to make it exciting to use.

I'd rather Porsche spent its software development $s on 1000 other things ahead of this.

The Luddites loving it are those weaned on manual ICE cars (I am part of that cohort). They will rapidly fade away.

An EV powertrain has so many more advantages, Porsche needs to focus on enhancing those, and finding other ways to differentiate its products (dynamics, the feel/smell/design etc).

I don't recall anyone still yearning for advance/retard controls to come back. Or non-synchro gearboxes. Nor engineers spending cycles trying to emulate them.

I also find deep irony in the industry spending billions on NVH reduction and efficiency (in an inherently flawed powertrain) and then this 😁

Let the old ways die. Kids learning to drive and enjoy driving today, the ones who will be spending six figure sums on cars tomorrow, don't miss last century tech. Fix forwards.

An electric motor is in all objective ways superior to a piston engine and two of the most important superiorities are low noise and wide power band.
I find it really quaint that old petrol heads still see the noise and need for loads of gear ratios to proceed in a reasonably brisk way as "engagement"

A gearbox is only there to compensate the shortcomings of an ice.
It's just silly to hold on to old tech by adding fake gearbox sounds imho.

Porsche did a fantastic job by adding an actual two-speed gearbox and added exactly the right sound, not mimicking an ice but a pure genuine sound, it's just right.

THAT is exactly what people are asking for 😁 Even worse, they want the car to jerk so it feels like you've interrupted drive.

I was going to post it's like when you played with toy cars on your gran's carpet.

Brrrrrr, brrrrrrrrrrrrrr, brrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

It's like the numpties who put massive dump valves on their turbo cars to hear the fart noises.

And here we are, Porsche owners wanting this.

Progress. We are doomed as a species. 😂

I think it is a good idea if it means a) the people who want this type of experience can find it and enjoy it, whilst still using an electric car and b) if it gets more people to drive electric.

From a pure experience point of view, it is more engaging and challenging to shift than simply pressing the pedal.

I have not tried one of those EVs that have simulated gears but certainly wouldnt mind of my Taycan had it, sounds fun!

As long as all those gimmicks can be turned on/off it's all fine with me.

I do like the sport sound ... sometimes :)
Can't deny it does add something to the experience, but for regular driving it's pointless.

I've had an audi with CVT gearbox that could simulate gears, either with the "gear" lever or paddles
Maybe it was because it had 8 gears, I got tired of doing that real quick.
But can't complain if they give you the option, if you dont like it, just dont use it.

I'm with Murph7355, I'd rather Porsche spent the money fixing things like the PCM so it actually works instead of having to reboot the thing every week or so to fix the freezing issues, not connecting issues, etc. Once that stuff works like it supposed to then they can worry about fake noise, personally I love how quite my car is and dread when we take my wife's Boxster some place that's more than a 20 minute drive.

I'd welcome this for slowing down, I miss ICE downshifting to scrub speed. As long is any system can be turned on/off I think it's a good thing.
