$55 Charging Cost - Normal or Outlier?

A 911 with a tank of 64 L would give you only a bit more than 500km (12 L/100km) for almost 130 euro on a highway here in France.

My Taycan it's only 350-400 km range but would cost 55 euro with Ionity.

A 911 wouldn't go "much further" & costs almost twice the price.



PS: the ICE Dacia of my wife with GPL (LPG) would do 1200km for 160 euro.

Yep. In the EU it seems you will always do better with electric because the price of gas is so high.

In the US on a road trip with only high-speed charger access, the cost of gas versus electric is about even (sometimes you can discount that a bit if you join the Tesla Membership Plan or EA Pass+ Plan prior to the trip). However, the situation is different when using a destination charger (hotel charging overnight) or charging at home. In those two situations, the cost that is about 1/4 the cost of gas on a per mile basis.

At present EVs are not cost-effective (at least looking at strictly the cost of energy) vs ICE cars for long road trips because public fast chargers are so expensive. Presumably the companies running the chargers are trying to recoup the investment required to provide them.

Here are some real numbers from a 2609 mile trip in early June. Obviously only applicable to U.S. driving. 2026 Audi S e-tron GT, 21" wheels (J1.2 roughly equivalent to the current Taycan GTS).

2609 miles consumed 750 kWh (per the app). At $0.405/kWh (actual average cost of DC charging on the trip with all taxes) that is a cost of $304. I signed up for Tesla's charging membership and the majority of the DC charging was at Tesla which kept the cost down.

2609 miles at 30mpg at $4.00/gallon would cost $348. (Actual gasoline cost was higher at that time. Considerably higher for a gallon of premium, and an equivalent car would not be getting 30 mpg).

So quick and dirty has my car a little cheaper versus gasoline. Actual cost was significantly cheaper.

I left with the battery at 90%/87 kWh @ $0.17/kWh - $15
Total cost of DC charging * - $195
Surcharge for charging at the rental house - $30
One level 2 hotel charge at no additional cost
but assume 40 kWh @ $0.17 - $7
Arrived home using 68 kWh on last leg & replaced
that energy at $0.17/kWh - $12

Total cost $259

* Two DC sessions were at no charge. One EA and one Flying J were never charged to any of my accounts. I estimated and included a cost of $20 each in the above cost.

My car averaged 3.48 miles/kWh so my cost is based on a relatively efficient car. J1.1 might narrow the difference. Plug in a Mercedes E450 that is rated at 25 mpg on premium fuel and the comparison widens.

As the saying goes YMMV but that trip, purely from a cost of energy standpoint, was considerably cheaper than in an equivalent ICE vehicle. As an EV fan I have to ask if there even is an equivalent ICE vehicle.

Thanks for the comprehensive data. This is very similar to my experience, but I haven’t done a road trip in a while so my data is not current.

I really appreciate seeing current energy cost trade-off data.

At Ionna and MB, how do you usually pay for the charge? Any problems? I have not used those networks but I want to.

I just place my phone with Apple Wallet up against the screen.
Except ... if the entire MB payment network is down, you can pay via the ChargePoint app. Not the ChargePoint virtual card in Apple Wallet. Perhaps not even the ChargePoint RFID card. But the ChargePoint phone app.
(Don't ask me how or why, as I didn't ask the MB phone rep any of that during that one session, and instead just thanked him, then just a few minutes later I was driving away, thanks to starting off at ~260kW then barely slowing down after that.)

I want to try both Ionna and MB just for the experience. Echo was not bad but it was not fast, just under 150 kW.

$0.60 is about average for peak rate. The shock will be felt by many as we roll off our initial free EA plans.

Many long term Tesla owners have already experienced this. Go to any mall with free AC charging and you'll be shocked to see the unavailability of the units with owners willing to sit in the car for hours charging at 9kws.

what mall are you sitting at that delivers 9 kW???

most malls have contacts with ChargePoint - and most chargepoint L2 AC chargers are 208V @ 30 amps or about 6 kW…

a 9 kW public L2 charger??? where - OMG that's 50% faster than a 6 kW charger…

Haha, okay not 9kw, likely 7kw. The one closest to me are Jolt units (formerly stranded Volta).
