I just can't see them waisting all that R&D when they are 95% done. The issues remaning is software and some battery related issues. But they seem to be mostly solved and just needs some tweaking before release.

Exiting the EV market is not happening. If they want to win more market shares they need to push on. But also develope the ICE 718.

I am looking forward to the 718 EV. Let's hope the rumours are not true.
Yet here we are discussing scrapping the entire project.

I didn't once say to take it back to the drawing board, poor take.

I am saying they're doing a poor job differentiating themselves from the pack and making a compelling driver focused product.

Let's be real, Hyundai is doing a better job, and there isn't any excuse for it.

The fate of whether the world gets to see, drive, and buy an electric Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman is about to be sealed.

The Drive can exclusively report a meeting is currently underway in Europe right now to make the final call on these EVs thanks to two sources. The meeting comes just over a week after reports that the electric sports cars might be killed off by what’s been referred to as “development hell.”

The stated reasoning, to date, has been “development delays and rising expenses,” which are all being taken into account by the new CEO, Michael Leiters, who stepped into the role on January 1 in place of former Porsche boss Oliver Blume.

Originally, the next-gen Boxster and Cayman were to be all electric. The current gas-powered models are already out of production. Porsche then walked back that decision and reportedly gas-powered models would, as an afterthought, factor back into the equation as a luxury item.

The electric sports car was to weigh less than 4,000 pounds, which posed an engineering challenge for a street-legal electric sports car with a heavy battery pack.

Likely set for the electric 718 twins, but coming to the Taycan later this year, Porsche developed fake gear shifts to mimic a transmission. The system would be a copy, in concept, to what is found in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, which Porsche was impressed with.

The electric 718 Boxster and Cayman twins would mark a further expansion of the German automaker’s electric lineup, which now includes the Taycan, Macan, and the upcoming Cayenne.

So based on the email from Audi, the platform is all well and good. So it's not a development road block.
Seems like Porsche is questioning how a 718 EV would fit in their lineup, as it will deliver higher performance than any 911, at lower prices.

Good at least Audi is confirming they are bringing the car out, on the same platform. They definitely seem to consider this car as a lot more important than porsche does, and they seem to be doing a lot of right moves in terms of EV, considering the China/SAE only audi for 30k, that looks amazing.

Well, even Cayenne EV crossed that line 😂

Just by virtue of all the petrol heads, manual clutch enthusiasts, weight, sound, and like everything they complain about. They'll have absolutely no issues continuing to sell 911s.

That's like asking, how will we sell chocolate ice cream when we introduce vanilla. They're fundamentally completely different flavors of car. Some like both, but most have a strong preference.

Motor1 - Porsche Boss Praises Electric 718: 'Great Car'
Porsche Boss Praises Electric 718: 'Great Car'
The team behind the Boxster and Cayman EVs is 'doing a great job.'

'I can share that we have tested the whole product portfolio last week, and I have driven several times now, 718. And I can tell you that it is a great car and people are doing a great job working on that.'

Porsche’s CEO is the second higher-up this month alone to refute rumors about the electric 718 being cancelled. In an interview last week with CarSales magazine, the automaker’s Australia Managing Director and CEO, Daniel Schmollinger, also praised the car after driving a prototype:

Well the 911 factory has been all tooled up to make it for the past 18 months. They even moved the limited production of petrol 718s off to a common VW factory to facilitate it.

Seeing as they can hardly make enough 911s for demand at the moment, I wonder if they'd consider producing it in the Taycan factory that is 500 meters away – given that is running at 50% of its production capacity since the downturn in Taycan demand?

Certainly Porsche talk up the flexibility of their Production 4.0 processes in the Taycan assembly building to consider it.

I'm going to guess not because they have already spent the money on tooling up the 911 facilities, but that was also to support the 400V hybrid 911 that are going down the line today.

I have a 992.2 911S due to arrive here in the first week in May, after giving up on getting a 718E before the end of the decade. I will be in a quandary if the Cayman E arrives sooner.

Me too; my 992.2 Carrera T arrives next week. After the Taycan J1.1 experience, I’m not sure I’d really be ready for another Porsche 1st version EV, but it will be interesting to observe the Cayman EV from a distance.

Interesting. I am no longer going to trust any posters here who have "insider information" or "my dealer secretly knows" sources about Porsche plannings. There were at least a handful who claimed to know for certain via their secret contacts that this car was dead.

I'm glad, of course, to see this isn't dead.
The other side of the coin... don't think the CEO is big on announcing such a bad news in his first month, and sending the stock price down to the gutter :)

They are not directly answering the question. But we will see, hopefully it does come out.

My dealer sales dude was always consistent... it's coming 2027. Still don't trust any of em.
