Extend Porsche Charging Service

My Taycan is now 3 years old and i have the option to extend the charging service for cheaper Ionity charging. Not sure what other companies offer discount through Porsche. Should i extend with Porsche or are there better options such as the Ionity app?

Here is a link to the official Porsche Charging service. If your car is 3 years old it does not renew at 0 cost.

Only within the 3 year period unfortunately. Tarifs have now changed (gone up) too. So it's not really "cheap" once you're out of the honeymoon period.

I stand corrected when I renewed it last time it was free but my 71plate Taycans 3 year subscription runs out at the end of the month…. The email arrived this morning. It’s £13.99 a month to keep the cheapish DC charging option at Porsche and IONITY or free if you want to pay the same as everywhere else.
Dont think I’ll bother as I spent 30 minutes on the phone to IONITY this week whilst standing in the rain waiting for their chargers at Doncaster Holiday Inn to reboot.

No point in me paying the £13.99/month. I charge at home mainly but use Ionity and MFG when I have to, probably only 2-3 times a month. There is a new Ionity charger which I could use instead of MFG. I'll have to see if the ionity card or free PCS makes more sense.

I switched to a Tesla subscription only 9.99 eur per month and more charging points then Ionity in the Netherlands plus lower rates. Only the charging is slightly slower then at Ionity

What do you consider "a lot"?

It's quite easy to find the break even point. If you take a scenario where you only use Ionity (the PAYG rate is £0.74/kWh), the amount of energy you need per month to cover the monthly subscription costs are:

Porsche Charging Service Plus (£13.99)

Price per kWh at Ionity = £0.39

Break even point = 39.98 kWh per month


Ionity Passport Power (£10.50)

Price per kWh at Ionity = £0.43

Break even point = 33.90 kWh per month



I don't think taking either of these amounts per month is a lot, but then depends on the individual. It doesn't even have to be in one session, obviously. Just taking it over multiple sessions in one month, and the subscriptions pay for themselves.

I'm in the fortunate position of barely needing to ever use public charging. The one "over range" journey I do regularly now has a destination charger (I funded it via similar maths to what you did here ). So I might need a top up charge once or twice a year at the outside.

Of course what your calcs also show is that the Porsche service is not as good value as Ionity's passport.

(Ionity's PAYG rate didn't used to be that high too - so all of these things are variable).

If you barely need to charge away from home, then of course, any scheme is not going to be worth it. What it does show is that the bar at which is *does* become cost effective is very low.

The Porsche service doesn't appear good value compared to Ionity's own scheme, but it also allows you access to many thousands of other chargers, including AC chargers, whereas Ionity doesn't. Of course, it depends on what price you pay for those (probably not competitive).

Beside the access / central billing through your Porsche account (if that's important to you) - I'm not sure the pricing on AC (or DC charging) on the 'new' pricing scheme from Porsche is good value either.

Once my three years pricing is up I'll be looking elsewhere for better value public charging.

No, I agree. I'd probably take out an Ionity subscription, unless I have another car that offers even better prices via Ionity. My i5 comes with a year free of their charging service which includes Ionity, and the prices per kWh for Ionity were recently lowered to £0.33/kWh, and €0.34/kWh. So I just use my BMW charging card when plugging in my Macan to Ionity.
